Department of Transportation is Hiring an ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST Near Shasta, CA

Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the Environmental Construction Liaison, assists Construction, Design and Environmental in meeting environmental commitments identified in NEPA/CEQA documents and regulatory permits. The incumbent is an interdisciplinary team member who will be responsible for preparing complex evaluations of construction sites and reviewing complex documents, technical studies, and analytical reports to ensure compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and numerous state and federal environmental resource laws and regulations. Duties would also include the review of these commitments in the draft project Plans, Specifications and Estimates documentation and ensure compliance of environmental commitments during construction. The incumbent provides consultation recommendations; gathers and compiles data from multi-disciplinary environmental branches; identifies and analyzes the environmental impacts of ongoing construction work sites on environmental resources and formulates, calculates and quantifies measures to mitigate biological, cultural, and community and land use impacts during construction. The incumbent must establish and maintain a professional working relationship with internal and external partners, various local partners and interested parties involved with Caltrans projects. The incumbent must be solution oriented and will need to investigate innovative solutions to complex problems to meet environmental commitments. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the transportation project development process from project scoping through construction. This position requires strong oral, analytical, and written skills with the specific ability to prepare technical field reports as well as written and verbal correspondence. This position will require frequent site visits, sometimes to remote areas, which may require driving a personal or state vehicle on public roadways or on uneven terrain. Occasional travel and overnight stays will be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating state owned or leased vehicles.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
You must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification to take the exam and be on the Caltrans examination list to be eligible for this position. Working Conditions

Position located in Redding, Shasta County.
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Employee will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. Base of operation is the Redding office; however, some fieldwork requires ability to work in a variety of climatic and geographical conditions and traverse rugged terrain. Employees will have to frequently travel to offices and field locations throughout the North Region. Overnight travel and overtime may be required.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
