Summary



This position is a Maintenance Mechanic, WG working in Tok, Alaska for the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge.
This position is also open to status candidates under announcement R BZ-MP. You must apply to each announcement separately if you wish to be considered under both recruitment methods.

Duties


As a Maintenance Mechanic your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Completes repairs, troubleshooting, testing that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats.
  • Locates leaks and determines their cause and extent of damage.
  • Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
  • Performs cement and concrete work on difficult projects, requiring more precise measurements and setting forms in curved as well as straight lines.
  • Operates various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or use a manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene, to join a variety of different kinds of parts or components.
  • Performs the painting and coating work to the buildings and facilities by brushing, rolling, and spraying, using coating materials that are prepared according to specific directions.
  • Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines.
  • Perform repairs on heavy equipment and machinery such as removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components.
  • Operates a variety of types of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on such projects like repairing and breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Heavy equipment may include: bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, backhoes, wheeled equipment/vehicles, and specialized equipment.
  • Plans and coordinates small to medium land management and earth moving projects within applicable specifications and requirements.
  • Operates a variety of farm-type tractors with towed or attached equipment on steep hills or rough terrain where there is significant danger of overturning the tractor or equipment.
  • Serve as a mentor for other employees and volunteers.
  • Keeps written maintenance records for all equipment operated.
  • Work includes developing a course of action to manage and complete facility and land management operations and earth moving projects to prevent injury to others and damage to the equipment.
