Department of Parks and Recrea is Hiring a DPR Summer 2024: Discovery Camp Near Washington, DC

Discovery Camp Facilitators will use a theme-based curriculum to help children get to know themselves and the world around them. Camp participants will participate in daily morning meetings, arts and crafts activities, explorations, Drop-Everything-And-Read (DEAR), games, sports, and choice activities.

Discovery Camp Assistant Facilitators will use a theme-based curriculum to help children get to know themselves and the world around them. Camp participants will participate in daily morning meetings, arts and crafts activities, explorations, Drop-Everything-And-Read (DEAR), games, sports, and choice activities.

Duties And Responsibilities

Facilitator

  • Supervise 20-30 youth ages 6-10 and keep them safe at all times
  • Create and nurture a structured camp environment with constant opportunities for learning and growth for children
  • Create and implement project-oriented activities through use of a prescribed curriculum
  • Create a positive environment with high expectations for staff and children
  • Provide feedback and direction to staff team to meet camp goals
  • Communicate clear and positive expectations and plans to parents
  • Implement positive behavior management techniques to redirect camper behavior
  • Swim with and monitor pool safety for campers during all swim sessions
  • Complete daily administrative duties daily (i.e., scheduling, attendance, planning, emailing)
  • Comply with personnel policies for camp staff

Assistant Facilitator

  • Assist Lead Facilitator with all camp functions daily
  • Supervise group of 6–10-year-old children and keep them safe at all times
  • Engage with campers for entirety of tour of duty
  • Plan, prepare and implement engaging summer camp activities
  • Swim with and monitor pool safety of campers during all swim sessions
  • Use positive strategies and techniques to redirect camper behavior
  • Comply with personnel policies for camp staff

Minimum Qualifications/Education/ Experience

Facilitator

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Available to attend training and work every day of summer camp from June 19 - August 18, 2023
  • At least 3 years of experience working with youth groups ages 6-10
  • At least 2 years of leadership experience
  • Passionate about working with youth
  • Demonstrated success creating and leading a safe and structured environment for children
  • Ability to plan and implement engaging activities for youth using a prescribed curriculum
  • Possess a creative, hard-working, energetic, organized, professional, flexible, and team-oriented disposition
  • Possess a positive, problem solving attitude in the face of challenges
  • Reflective and responsive to feedback
  • Comfortable using email as a main form of communication with supervisors

Assistant Facilitator

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Available to attend training and work every day of summer camp from June 19 - August 18, 2023
  • At least 2 years of experience working with groups of 6–10-year-old children
  • Leads children by always setting a positive example
  • Ability to plan and implement engaging activities for children
  • Takes direction and feedback with ease and implements tasks with a positive attitude
  • Possess a creative, hard-working, energetic, organized, professional, flexible, and team-oriented disposition

Other Significant Facts

Area of Consideration: This position is part of the Pathway to Government Employment Partnership Program. District residents who received a high school diploma from the District of Columbia Public Schools or a District public charter school or received a GED or its equivalent from the District of Columbia will receive priority consideration for this entry-level position. Applicants must provide a high school transcript, GED certificate, high school diploma, or other applicable documentation along with verification of District residency before the District government may extend a final offer of employment.

Tour of Duty: Varies

Salary:

  • Facilitator: $24/ hr.
  • Assistant Facilitator: $18/ hr.

Position Designation: This position is designated as a Protection Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
