DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE is Hiring a FISH AND WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN Near Yolo, CA

Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) and the lead of an Environmental Scientist, the incumbent will provide technical and office support for the Central Valley Angler Survey in the upper Sacramento River system.
The incumbent will equip, maintain, operate, repair, and assign project sport-utility vehicles, trucks, and vessels, including jet boats, drift boats, and kayaks, for angler survey work and other biological research activities in the Sacramento River system. Recommend project gear and equipment purchases, compile bids, and work with the Environmental Scientist, Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), and Fisheries Branch administrative staff to complete purchases. Maintain all project vehicle and skiff logs. Perform semi-skilled tasks relating to the design, fabrication, operation, and maintenance of angler survey and other fisheries research sampling gear using common shop power tools such as saws and drills.
The incumbent will also assist the Environmental Scientist by training, directing, and mentoring seasonal staff in the safe use and maintenance of small boats used for collection of biological data in the Sacramento River anadromous and resident sport fisheries.
In addition, the incumbent will assist with QA/QC of incoming field data and associated biological samples and enter data into an established relational database and with field work relating to the collection of data from Sacramento River sport anglers.
In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam:

Working Conditions

Program: Central Valley Fisheries Monitoring and Research
Location: Work will occur primarily in the Central Valley Angler Survey office and warehouse in West Sacramento or in a field setting. Field conditions are often adverse, and include heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
Hours: Variable and seasonal, 30-40 hours/week. Requires work on weekends and holidays.
The applicant may work up to 1,500 hours per calendar year.

Special Requirements

  • Boat trailering, towing, operation, rules, and safety.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekend days and holidays, and to wear a uniform.
  • Walk through mud and thick vegetation, deal with mosquitoes, ticks, and other stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife, and work on steep or uneven terrain, in extreme weather, and under physically challenging conditions.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs., swim 50 yards and tread water at least 5 minutes, perform strenuous field work in remote areas and in adverse weather.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience operating various types of watercraft, in particular jet boats, under challenging river conditions.
  • Knowledge of and experience with field equipment maintenance, in particular jet boats, trucks, and trailers.
  • Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Access and Excel.
  • Bilingual skills in English/Spanish, English/Russian, English/Mandarin, or other.
