DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE is Hiring an ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST Near San Diego, CA
Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor for the Wildlife Biodiversity Program in the South Coast Region (SCR), this position is responsible for coordinating the Department’s research and monitoring for listed and special concern wildlife species that occur wholly or primarily within the SCR. The incumbent will also implement regional aspects of Department programs on wider ranging listed or special concern species. Duties entail planning, coordinating, and conducting local field studies, obtaining funds for projects, preparing and managing contracts, and preparing and approving Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) associated with scientific collecting permits. Incumbent will coordinate and conduct research and monitoring on CDFW lands, provide input on management and monitoring plans for California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) lands and on properties associated with regional planning efforts. This position will coordinate with other SCR functions particularly with appropriate Habitat Conservation programs such as Natural Community Conservation Planning (NCCP), Headquarters (HQ) personnel, as well as coordinate with other agencies on listing and recovery actions. This position serves as Regional coordinator for California least tern monitoring data.

Working Conditions
Office will be located in San Diego. Availability and willingness to work flexible hours (evening meetings, Saturday/Sundays events, holidays), travel overnight, routinely conduct field work in wet and dry conditions carrying bulky items throughout the region's watersheds, may need to carry up to 40 lbs. in uneven terrain in inclement weather or excessive heat, and to work for hours at a time in front of the computer, at meetings or in traffic situations going to and from meetings or field visits. Possession of a valid driver license.

Applicant must include a one-page Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) using Arial 12-font for this position. The SOQ must include "Statement of Qualifications" in the header, along with the Job Control number and the candidate's name. The SOQ is a narrative discussion.
Questions:
1. Describe your experience conducting wildlife surveys (i.e., birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians) and assessing their respective habitats.
2. Describe your experience writing reports, summarizing and analyzing data, and include the name of any data management/statistical tools you are familiar with.
3. Describe your experience negotiating a difficult outcome or achieving a goal. Describe any positives and or negatives with your experience(s).
4. Describe your experience working with others in a team environment and leading projects/surveys.
5. Describe you experience in interacting with the public, other agencies and/or partners during a work assignment.
Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of wildlife taxa species and their habitats in Southern California.
- Knowledge of sampling and monitoring methods and techniques of avian, small mammal and other wildlife species.
- Experience working with California least terns, shorebirds, seabirds, small mammals and/or bats is desirable.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, organizational skills, flexibility, strong personal initiative, negotiation skills, and the ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to conduct frequent field visits, travel, and meetings with the public, consultants, engineering staff, and government agencies.
- Ability to get along well with others.
