DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE is Hiring an ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST Near Sacramento, CA

Interested in an opportunity to join a dynamic and diverse team at the Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL)? Learn more about this unique limited-term position! Under supervision of the WHL Environmental Program Manager, and direction of Senior Veterinary and Environmental Scientist Specialist staff the position provides support for mortality investigations and disease surveillance for mountain lion, nongame and avian species.   • Conducts gross necropsies of mountain lions, various nongame species, and wild birds to establish cause of death and monitor diseases and toxicants in these species. Works with other laboratories, agencies and scientists to coordinate additional disease testing.
  • Compiles, organizes, and analyzes biological test results to assess the prevalence and geographic distribution of pathogens in wildlife. Assists with drafting reports. Coordinates with Regional staff and non-departmental researchers to achieve objectives for collaborative population and health monitoring projects.
  • Assists with fulfilling federally-funded grant projects conducting health and conservation work for nongame species, including: snake fungal disease surveillance, rabbit hemorrhagic disease monitoring in endangered riparian brush rabbits, Amargosa vole recovery efforts, White nose syndrome surveillance in bats, and carnivore health and conservation projects.
  • Coordinates sample tracking and inventory, submission of samples to laboratories; assists with field work including live capture and sampling of animals and translocation projects; drafts reports and data summaries.

This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.
During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Special Requirements

-Possession of valid driver license required.
  • Ability to lift items up to 40 lbs. required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote areas with uneven terrain.
  • Ability to drive for extended periods of time.
  • Vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate antibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations because of the species involved.
