About this job:
The primary function of an employee in this class is to organize, schedule, coordinate and monitor safety and security training activities. The work involves analyzing, researching and developing training courses independently or jointly with other law enforcement and security organizations. The work includes considerable public contact, routine research tasks and ensuring compliance with training requirements with Federal, State, and local agencies. In addition, the position will be armed and fulfill a supervisory role in the department with emphasis on the Patrol Operations division.

What You'll Do:
  • Assists in the development and coordination of multiple complex project schedules, production budgets and logistics of safety & security training operations; oversees complex projects to achieve results in a timely and cost-effective manner by providing direction, facilitation and control of resources
  • Oversees the research, development and delivery of a comprehensive program of training courses. Coordinates instructor scheduling, facility availability and associated budgets
  • Instructs/teaches/facilitates training programs
  • Supervises subordinates' activities and work product by delegation, performance evaluation, disciplinary action and conflict resolution; provides leadership, guidance, motivation, counseling and/or discipline to contract staff, subject matter experts or student participants
  • Develops and monitors annual and long-range safety & security departmental training programs. Directs the design and distribution of surveys, interviews and questionnaires for conducting training needs assessments.
  • May serve as a subject matter expert or technical consultant for agency training programs
  • Develops, implements or evaluates new and existing training programs. Manages the development of instructor-level training to maintain a cadre of safety & security instructors. Facilitates the development of training program masters to ensure standardization of instructional materials, handouts, tests, lesson plans and delivery
  • Communicates with diverse audiences (e.g., employees, outside agencies, the public, etc.) to provide information and clarification regarding training programs, actions, policies and procedures
  • Reviews outside provider training programs to ensure the highest standards are maintained, content remains current and instruction is proficient; participates in the development and updating of policies, procedures, administrative rules, goals and objectives
  • Participates in the preparation and administration of the unit budget. Researches and identifies opportunities for acquiring grant funding for special projects and services
  • Supervises/assists in the production and distribution of various publications (e.g., training reports, calendar schedule, workbooks, instructional guides, newsletters, etc.); directs the preparation of comprehensive reports (e.g., staff studies, evaluations, needs assessments, grants solicitations, etc.) to document events or specific needs
  • Remains current in job specific procedures in order to apply the most appropriate methodologies by attending conferences, educational programs and seminars, reading professional publications, using the Internet, and participating in professional organizations
  • Monitors the development of negotiated training contracts and related service terms and conditions
  • Designs and applies evaluation techniques and proficiency testing methods to measure the effectiveness of training
  • Directs the review and selection of training materials and acquires copyright clearances in order to obtain the highest quality source materials to ensure compliance with federal copyright laws
  • Supervises the design, development and implementation of the conversion of traditional training materials to alternate learning formats (e.g., computer assisted instruction (CAI), Webcast delivery, video streaming, Internet, etc.)
  • Supervises the records management of unit activities (e.g., employee performance, events, meetings, budgets, etc.)
  • Oversee and coordinate new hire training and annual in-service training for all Safety and Security operational staff.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of operational policies and procedures for the Safety and Security Department
  • Develop and maintain a cooperative and professional working relationship with all school district staff, City of Denver Police Department, and other law enforcement in all matters of mutual interest.

  • This is a safety-sensitive position within the DPS School District and mandatory position requirements include: a copy of current Driving Record at time of hire, clear CBI criminal/background investigation and compliance with Drug Free/Pre-hire and Random Drug testing conducted throughout duration of assignment
  • Obtain or maintain DPS Safety & Security armed patrol certification to be used in the event of special events or operational needs
  • As needed, provides general supervision to both CSO and Patrol Operations divisions
  • Assists the Deputy Chief in a wide range of administrative functions
  • When necessary monitor personnel; prepare and submit reports, time sheets and other necessary documentation
  • Respond to dispatched or assigned calls for service or assistance
  • As needed or requested, reviews and corrects Safety and Security incident reports that are filed by site based security staff.
  • Maintain compliance with School District policies, existing department policies, procedures and practices, existing local, state, or federal laws and ordinances pertaining to unlawful activities on or about school properties.
  • Respond as necessary to requests for security assistance from individual school/sites and assume supervisory control of security personnel.

  • Be completely familiar with the School District’s policies, existing department policies, procedures and practices, existing local, state or federal laws and ordinances pertaining to unlawful activities on or about District schools and facilities.
  • May be called back to duty in an emergency or systems failure.

What You’ll Need:
  • High School Diploma or GED minimum
  • Associates or technical degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related fields
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a City and County of Denver Merchant Guard License and/or Denver Code Enforcement Authorization
  • Sixty (60) hours post-secondary education in criminal justice or related field of law enforcement is preferred
  • Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification and ability to maintain it is preferred but not required
  • Four (4) years’ experience in the security field
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience required
  • Experience in DPS security is highly preferred
  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess leadership and supervisory skills
  • Experience with the DPS geographic locations, functions of other divisions and units function and operation.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred. Recommended
  • Strong attention to detail

  • Complete knowledge of duties and responsibilities of Campus Security Officers
  • Familiar with all operational procedures and policies of the department and the base functions of other divisions and units of the department.
  • Possess a very high degree of positive work and professional ethics and dependability
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able and willing to take physical control of persons who are committing crimes against others while on school district property.
  • Ability to interact with diverse customer populations and workforce and to mitigate potentially volatile situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough preliminary investigations including interviews of victims and witnesses, recognition and collection of evidence, and accurate report writing and documentation of information received.
  • Familiarity with the geographic boundaries of the School District and a good working knowledge of all buildings.
  • Ability to apply independent thinking to decision making within confines of established procedures
