Summary

The Department of Surgery at Denver Health Medical Center is seeking applications for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to the Trauma and Acute Surgery (TACS) service on nights. Under general supervision of an attending surgeon, and in collaboration with surgical fellows and residents, the TACS APP attends trauma activations/alerts and evaluates new general surgery consults in the Emergency Department and throughout the hospital. Examines, diagnoses and develops treatment plans for patients. Performs diagnostic testing, places referrals, writes prescriptions, and performs procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols and available equipment. They also ensure an environment of safe quality care and continual quality improvement. Demonstrates sound clinical judgement, professional communications skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional growth through participation in continuing education, staff development, and committee involvement. There is minimal to no operative time with this position. Typical schedule is 3 x 12-13 hour rotating night shifts per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. The candidate’s duties will include evaluation, examination, and patient care management in the consult capacity. This includes evaluation of patients in the Emergency Department and hospitalized inpatients. Patient assessment, patient education, care coordination, writing orders, direct patient care procedures, disease management and discharge are integral to the job role.

2. Closely collaborate with general and trauma surgeons, resident staff, sub-specialty surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, intensivists, and consulting specialty physicians to provide optimal care of the TACS patients.

3. Assist with ongoing development of TACS service with participation in quality improvement, hospital staff education, development of service-related guidelines, education of residents and students and attendance in Department of Surgery core conferences as schedule permits.

4. Completes required chart documentation legibly, thoroughly and in a timely manner.

5. Attends and participates in administrative staff meetings. Participates in Denver Health initiatives including committees. Participates and complies with operational and educational activities at the discretion of the lead surgical APP.

6. Teaches medical students, physician assistant students, nursing students, residents, and fellows.

7. The APP may become involved in research projects that can culminate in national meeting presentations and manuscript publication.

8. Abides by the Medical Staff Bylaws and conducts oneself in a professional and collegial manner in all aspects of work. Abides by all hospital policies including timeliness of documentation, chart completion, and electronic medical record maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

1. Graduation from an accredited educational program for either Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners. Successful completion of applicable certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).

2. At least one year related clinical experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge of medical principles and procedures.

2. Skill in performing physical exams, formulation assessments of and treatment plans for patients.

3. Ordering appropriate diagnostic studies to aid in diagnosis.

4. Knowledge of appropriate administration and prescription of medications.

5. Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in selecting proper treatment.

6. Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.

7. Ability to enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and continuing education.

8. Accountability for role in department's productivity, efficiency and financial viability.

Computers and Technology

1. Computer skills required.

2. Microsoft office or equivalent skills preferred.

Certificates, Licenses and Registration

1. Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification/CPR. Licensed by the State of Colorado as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; must register supervising physician upon assignment with the Colorado Board of Medical Examiner’s. . All Certifications and Licenses required for this job must be kept current as a condition of continued employment.
