Job Description
Expanded functions dental assistants support dentists by preparing treatment rooms, ensuring equipment meets cleanliness standards, and liaising with patients. This job involves documenting and updating treatment plans, taking X-rays, cleaning teeth, and taking impressions. Most expanded functions dental assistants work full time in a clinical setting, but there are opportunities to work part time depending on the practice. Applicants for this job should have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, and the stamina to spend hours on their feet.

EFDA’s Responsibilities
Prepares the treatment room for patients by following prescribed procedures and protocols.
Prepares patients for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patients.
Provides instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to the treatment area; positioning instruments for dentist's access; suctioning; passing instruments.
Provides materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the patient's mouth.
Maintains patient appearance and ability to masticate by fabricating temporary restorations; cleaning and polishing removable appliances.
Educates patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control, and postoperative instructions.
Documents dental care services by charting in patient records.
Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies
Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
Education & Experience
Must be a registered DA in the state of WA
Must be a licensed EFDA in the state of WA
Must be enrolled to complete seven clock hours of AIDS education and training
Must have dental assisting experience
Skills & Abilities
Dexterity – expanded functions dental assistants must work well with their hands, as they work in tight spaces on a small area of the body while using sharp tools and instruments
Listening skills – a key part of this job is listening to patients and other healthcare workers, as well as following instructions precisely to best treat patients and carry out a number of tasks
Organization skills – expanded functions dental assistants need the correct tools and equipment prepared for dentists ahead of each appointment. They must also be aware of what procedures are being carried out, so organization is essential to this position
Attention to detail – expanded functions dental assistants pay close attention to rules and protocols so that patients are safe and comfortable during treatment
Interpersonal skills – this job requires the ability to work closely with colleagues and patients, so strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary
