Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification by the Louisiana Chaplains Association plus two years of experience as an ordained minister.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Denominational authority to minister in the specified facility is required at the time of appointment.
NOTE:
Certification in a religious vocation, such as a Roman Catholic nun, may be accepted in lieu of ordination upon request by the appropriate ecclesiastical authority.
NOTE: Documentation of certification must be submitted at the time of application.
Job Concepts
Function of Work:
To supervise the Pastoral Care Division in a Facility and to provide pastoral care to patients, clients, residents, inmates, etc. and their families through religious services, counseling services, rites and sacraments.
Level of Work:
Advanced.
Supervision Received:
Broad review from higher-level administrative personnel.
Supervision Exercised:
May exercise functional supervision over contract and visiting clergy and religious volunteers.
Location of Work:
DHH and health care facilities and Department of Public Safety and Corrections correctional institutions; statewide.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Clinical Chaplain 1 by the responsibility for supervising the Pastoral Care Program of a small facility.
Differs from Clinical Chaplain 3 and 4 by lack of supervisory responsibility for subordinate Chaplains.
Examples of Work
Supervises an entire pastoral care program in a facility or serves as a subordinate to a Clinical Chaplain of a higher grade.
Develops plans, policies, procedures, and budget for the pastoral care division.
Coordinates the pastoral care program with the total treatment program.
Participates in specialized counseling services.
Conducts religious services; performs religious rites; provides pastoral counseling to patients, clients, residents, inmates, etc. of a facility.
Applies crisis intervention principles in crisis situations.
Conducts pastoral care orientation sessions for the facility's patients, clients, residents, inmates.
Plans religious educational and recreational activities for patients, clients, inmates, etc.
Coordinates the resources within the total community for meeting the spiritual needs of persons within the facility.
Communicates with families and others on behalf of patients, clients, residents, inmates, etc.
Prepares the budget for pastoral care program.
Maintains records and prepares reports on patients, clients, residents, inmates, etc.
Confers with families and others on behalf of patients, clients, residents, inmates, etc.
