The First Year Student Experience (FYE) Instructor is responsible for teaching University Seminar courses at Delaware State University. Under the supervision of the Coordinator for Student Transition, FYE instructors will teach the class based on the outlined curriculum, facilitate student engagement with mandatory first-year seminars, and monitor and identify students demonstrating “at-risk” academic performance, such as poor attendance and missed assignments. Student monitoring will be reported via the early alert system.
University Seminar is a one (1) credit/two (2) contact hour course meeting virtually/online and synchronously via Blackboard. FYE instructors must commit two hours per week per course for instruction, student engagement, and virtual office hours.

• Teach the University Seminar course synchronously (virtually at a specific time).
• Uphold and follow through on all prescribed elements of the University Seminar curriculum.
• Evaluate and grade student class work, laboratory work, assignments, papers, and examinations.
• Inform students about their progress by updating grades, completing academic alerts, and providing feedback regularly.
• Be available to students for individual consultation (virtual office hours).
• Assess University Seminar student learning outcomes and use the assessment results to improve student learning.
• Lead one Student Success Assistant who will be the liaison between the instructor and the students.
• Attend all University Seminar Instructor training, orientations, and professional development workshops.
• The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks that logically relate to the position.

• Two (2) – Five (5) years of teaching experience or related experience providing individual student support in academic advising or student success in higher education.
• Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate students effectively.
• Deep and genuine commitment to working directly with first-year college students.
• Must possess sensitivity to cultural diversity and the ability to communicate and interact effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
• Desire to advance student learning, development, and success in college.

• Knowledge of Delaware State University’s policies, procedures, and processes.
• Ability to work independently and without intense supervision and effectively contribute to a leadership team with a service-oriented philosophy.
• Strong written and oral communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.

• Master's Degree in any field
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching college students, more specifically in first-year experience courses or programs
  • Preference will be given to those with experience teaching first-year seminars, general education, or introduction courses.
• Must be committed to working directly with first-year college students.
• Must be proficient with technology and demonstrate mastery of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook & Microsoft 365), Banner, Webex, and Blackboard.
• Knowledge of databases, student information systems, and PeopleSoft. Proficiency with EAB Student Success Collaborative preferred.
• Must be able to problem solve and work independently.
