About Sussex Montessori SchoolSussex Montessori School was approved as a charter school by the Delaware Department of Education in April 2018 and is currently serving grades K through 4. One grade per year will be added to eventually serve children in grades K through 6. The Sussex Montessori School Board believes that the creation of a Montessori public school in Sussex County, DE will improve student learning, allow for greater choice for parents, and serve as a model for alternative approaches to education by providing a proven and innovative teaching and learning environment.
The mission of Sussex Montessori School is to nurture the development of empathetic, collaborative, persistent and innovative global and community citizens in accordance with the time-tested philosophy of Maria Montessori, through authentic personalized learning experiences, respectful relationships, opportunities to innovate, and a focus on global citizenship.

Title of this Position: Substitute Teacher
Reports To: Lead Teacher and the Director of Teaching and Learning
Job DescriptionThe substitute teacher works cohesively and in partnership with the lead teacher. The job duties range from organizing materials and cleaning the workspace to facilitating the learning process for each child. All substitutes are expected to support the Montessori teaching method. Specifically, they must help guide the child through self-directed activities, allowing the child to develop at his or her own pace. They are expected to foster, along with the lead teacher, a nurturing and stimulating non-competitive environment and to model grace and courtesy in all interactions with students, colleagues and parents.
Substitute teachers assist the lead teacher in providing a warm, nurturing and safe environment where self-direction is enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected.
Qualities Needed to Thrive in this roleSupport the Lead teacher and the mission of Sussex Montessori School;
Act as a support person during class work times;
Work with individual and small groups of children as directed by the Lead Teacher and/or Director of Teaching and Learning;
Assist the Lead Teacher in the daily monitoring of students' work;
Model grace and courtesy;
Assist each child in the development of independence;
Take responsibility for the safety and physical well-being of the children at all times;
Supervise children in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips at all times;
