Objectives

Perform basic assessments of clients' needs for medical, financial, housing assistance & other possible community resources. Provides input in formulation of re-entry plan & makes necessary referrals or submits required paperwork for eligibility determination by providers; assists clients with applying for/obtaining the services listed above; collections, prepares & maintains data for assessments. Obtains releases of information for clients and families pertaining to representation; requests records pertaining to representation, including but not limited to court records, medical records, education records, and children’s services records).

Job Standards

  • Four (4) year degree in an accredited college or university in social work or closely related curricula.
  • Must have a current license for social work in the State of Ohio.;
  • Must possess a State of Ohio Driver’s License and acceptable driving record;
  • Must meet and maintain qualifications for driving on county business as a continued condition of employment;
  • One (1) year of experience in the field of social work, preferably associated with the judicial system, counseling, and knowledge of local social agencies and services.
  • All required licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Essential Functions

  • Interviews clients to observe and discover additional facts, attitudes, reactions.
  • Makes field investigations, including discussions with client family members, friends, neighbors, etc.
  • Communicates with witnesses.
  • Makes recommendations relative to sentencing alternative, clients' efforts to correct problems, etc.
  • Prepares pre-sentence reports.
  • Maintains a knowledge of social agencies and their services and a line of communications with such agencies.
  • In cases that result in incarceration, when appropriate, pursues early release options, advises client, etc.
  • Performs other similar and related duties or duties as may be designated by attorneys.
  • Other duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EQUIPMENT:
Ability to operate a variety of office equipment such as computer and related software, copier, telephone, iPad, calculator, fax machine, and other equipment necessary to perform duties. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is required.
CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE:
  • Knowledge of Ohio criminal law;
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, and guidelines;
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use basic math and accounting concepts;
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use security measures for handling confidential and sensitive material;
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize assignments;
  • Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and recommend solutions using judgment, and analytical skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service including the ability to work effectively with customers who may be upset, distraught, irate, emotionally or otherwise unable to function with a reasonable range of constructive behaviors;
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment, and independent decision-making authority;
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure, and to set and achieve goals;
  • Ability to organize and maintain large volumes of information and paperwork; and
  • Ability to effectively plan independently and in collaboration with other staff units and outside agencies.
II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
Work consists of highly complex, varied, non-standardized tasks requiring the application of numerous laws, rules, regulations and procedures.
III. RESPONSIBILITY:
Individual receives general guidance allowing for the planning of procedures and methods to obtain objectives. Work is not necessarily reviewed by a supervisor. Individual will be responsible to provide advice to indigent criminal clients regarding their case and attorneys regarding case strategy.
IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Contact is with co-workers, judges, court staff, employees of other county offices, and the general public. The purpose of these contacts is to guide and direct, check on work assigned, coordinate services, and handle questions about the work of the individual and the office.
V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of the position are identified as sedentary work, which may require the lifting of up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Physical Activity: The physical activity of the position is manual dexterity, talking, hearing, listening, reaching, and walking.
Visual Activity: Individual performs work where objects being viewed are close to the eyes.
Job Location: The minimum work conditions for the position indicates that the individual is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Travel is required locally primarily within Delaware County.
