Employment Type: Full time Shift: Day Shift Description: Medical Technologist Hematology Lead Applies theoretical and technical knowledge and skills to perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests. Exercises independent professional judgement in determining the acceptability of results prior to release to the patient record. Produces accurate and complete results. Recognizes critical values and responds appropriately. Performs quality control testing in accordance with established laboratory protocol. Performs and documents corrective action as needed. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots complex laboratory instruments. Maintains appropriate and accurate documentation and records whether in the laboratory information system or manual logs. Manages infectious specimens, hazardous chemicals, and potentially dangerous instruments in accordance with hospital and departmental policies to maintain a safe work environment. Changes work methods or schedule and modifies behavior, when necessary, to adapt to various situations and changing work demands. Supervises daily section operations and outcomes of work performed by others via direct observation, and review of daily work logs when needed. Reviews and critically analyzes work of other technologists, makes independent decisions concerning acceptability of assays. Assures integrity of equipment function and assay systems through maintenance of quality assurance standards. Oversees internal and external quality control program of section and maintains compliance with regulatory standards. Assists in review, revision, and writing of new and existing laboratory procedures, policies, and safety manuals. Interviews prospective employees, monitors competency of staff, and conducts performance appraisals. Counsels’ employees, issues verbal warnings and improves work performance of staff as needed. Performs a variety of highly complex, technically demanding clinical assays on infectious specimens. Interprets the validity of assay results using professional judgement based on knowledge of physiological systems and principles of instrumentation and quality assurance. Documents and communicates results of these analyses, facilitating appropriate diagnosis and treatment of patients. Maintains thorough knowledge of all assays, reagent systems, and instrumentation to assist technologists when problems occur. Continuously strengthens knowledge of laboratory principles and techniques through participation in continuing education activities. Communicates and interprets laboratory results, procedures, and policies to physicians and health care providers. Interfaces with pathology staff and all levels of hospital personnel. May serve on a variety of committees as deemed necessary. Solves operational problems if technologists are unable to do so and is responsible for completing difficult tasks. Evaluates recent technological advances and new procedures for possible laboratory implementation. Monitors competency of section technologists. Verifies assay parameters and acceptability of control results. Provides interpretation of results and parameters when necessary. Oversees and maintains a continuous workflow in the laboratory. Assigns work to laboratory staff and assists in filling in schedule vacancies. Is required to work a weekend and assigned holidays. Conducts continuing education programs. Instructs and trains staff and Medical Technology students. Demonstrates financial accountability through accurate documentation of workload and efficient use of reagents and supplies. Orders and oversees adequate inventory. Demonstrates proficiency with Laboratory Information System. Demonstrates professional, friendly, courteous, interpersonal skill in interactions with hospital staff, supervisory staff, co-workers, customers, and patients/family members.
