DC Water Candidate Experience site is Hiring a Physical Science Technician - (24-CW&T-810600-021) Near Washington, DC

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this job. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform work-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description. This job description is not a “contract” between the employee and the Authority. The job duties and essential functions may be changed at the discretion of the CEO/General Manager.

SUMMARY:

Conducts a variety of analytical chemical test on wastewater and sludge samples to ensure that the plant process operation is consistent with design and/or legal requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Collects samples and conducts a variety of analytical and biological/chemical tests.
  • Analyzes process data to detect problems.
  • Calibrates and adjusts laboratory equipment in the main lab and field labs and assists operators with lab equipment where needed.
  • Prepares chemical reagents and biological media for laboratory use.
  • Prepares daily reports of process operation.
  • Conducts special projects including working with contractors to conduct studies at various facilities.
  • Attends meetings and conferences associated with this position.
  • Complies with applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Key Working Relationships:  Interfaces with other operations staff within the Dept. of Wastewater Treatment.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE & OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  

The minimum qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary for an individual to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable amounts of training are provided.

  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and three (3) years of experience conducting analytical chemical testing.
  • Skill in setting up equipment associated with TS, TSS, BOD, SBOD, COD, SCOD, TKN, ammonia, NOx, Total P, orthophosphate, pH, alkalinity, hardness, TOC and volatile acids.
  • Ability to perform manual or automated wet chemistry or automated colorimetric analyses procedures associated with the various tests outlined above in accordance with EPA approved procedures as selected and implemented by D.C. WASA.
  • Ability to interpret lab test data in terms of expected values and range of acceptable values.
  • Ability to operate lab instruments.
  • Ability to replace sampler tubes, peristaltic pumps, control modules, pH and DO probes.
  • Ability to configure automatic samplers using simple programming instructions from the service manual.
  • Utilizes personal computer and maintains a working knowledge of applicable software programs (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, etc.) for data analysis and reports.
