High School Teacher- Choral / General Music

Reports To : Building Principal

Salary Schedule / Grade : Refer to DEA Salary Schedule

F.L.S.A Status : Exempt

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, plan and organize instruction in ways that

maximize student learning, employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate

subject matter to students including strategies to meet diverse student needs.

SUBJECT-SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Enable students to develop an appreciation of the art of music performance.
  • Plan a balanced music program. Organize daily class activities so preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Select and requisition books, musical instruments and instructional aids. Maintain required inventory records.
  • Instruct students in the proper care and use of equipment.
  • Plan musical programs for the school and community. Coordinate rehearsals and direct students in preparation for scheduled programs.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instructs secondary school students in developing knowledge and skills in choral music in accordance with the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Enables students to develop an appreciation of the art of music.
  • Demonstrates techniques to students in choral music concepts.
  • Develops clear and concise instructional lesson plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of preparation, instruction, and rehearsal time.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction and adapts the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities.
  • Uses a variety of instructional techniques and musical repertoire appropriate for the ages and skill level of students.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs musical experiences for the school and community with a minimum of three evening performances per school year.
  • Prepares students and required documents for District and State OMEA Festivals.
  • Instructs students in the proper care and use of equipment.
  • Organizes storage areas and controls the use of materials and equipment to prevent loss, abuse, injury, or security breach.
  • Maintains an organized and workable inventory of all music and equipment related to the choral program.
  • Makes minor adjustments to musical equipment and requests repairs as appropriate.
  • Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and understandings and prepares regular progress reports.
  • Conferences regularly with parents / guardians regarding behavior observations and the performance of students.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Maintains thorough records for each student.
  • Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, and instructional aids.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Verifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Current and valid State of Ohio teaching licensure appropriate for the specific teaching position
  • Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section -83-06

Knowledge & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Relevant teaching experience or background in subject matter area
  • Sound grasp of curriculum for the appropriate subject area and the Ohio Learning Standards
  • Experience working in an urban school district or working with urban education
  • Understanding of the importance of literacy- and language-based approaches to teaching content area
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, child development principles, and a wide range of instructional and intervention strategies
  • Ability and willingness to utilize technology in the enhancement of student learning

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES / DEMANDS

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb stairs
  • Occasionally lift and / or move lightweight items up to 40 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in a classroom setting
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Work may be subject to frequent interruptions
  • Some assignments are subject to completion within strict timelines
  • Periodic travel for meetings, professional development activities, and work assignments
