GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK Under the supervision of the Director II - Services for Exceptional Children, the Coordinator II - Services for Exceptional Children is responsible for planning, development, coordination, and management of the special education programs, related services, and personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Meet regularly with the Director II - Exceptional Children to assure that the direction set for special education programs is consistent with the strategic plan of the school division and the Board
Ensure that all students with disabilities are provided a free and appropriate public education through the provision of instructional programs
Ensure special education teachers are implementing high leverage practices with fidelity
Monitor special education program operations to ensure compliance with guidelines, regulations, and requirements of the school division and federal grant requirements
Monitor academic performance of students with disabilities to ensure growth and targeted performance
Assure the accurate and timely submission of all reports as requested by the local school division and the State Department of Education
Monitor, analyze, interpret, and present data sets
Provide high level support to instructors in the implementation of programs, including professional development, observing teachers, and giving appropriate feedback
Implement and supervise the training of special education instructional paraprofessionals
Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding emerging special education issues, changes in the laws and case law, and educational methods of educating students with disabilities
Present information to parents and community leaders regarding the specific programs available and services available for special education
Manage CCEIS grant and programming, including poverty training and other district initiatives
Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Proven record as a successful teacher, administrator, or supervisor
Experience in curriculum and instruction, special education, or related field, such as administration and supervision
Ability to define problems and apply problem-solving techniques
Ability to effectively manage assignments and meet critical deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers, principals, parents, and community agencies
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's degree or above
Holds or is eligible for a renewable Virginia teaching license with endorsements in special education and educational administration and supervision
Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in special education or as an administrator supervising special education programs at the elementary, middle, and/or secondary level
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS Work is typically performed in an office setting. Regular coordination with school administrators is necessary. Daily liaison activity throughout the division is necessary. Contact with media personnel may be required. Attendance of school division activities is necessary. Regular contact is made with teachers, parents, students, and other community members. These contacts may be contentious. Occasional contact with School Board members, state administrators, and representatives of federal agencies is necessary. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 12 months (260 days); at least 8 hours per day
EVALUATION Performance evaluation will be conducted annually by Director II - Exceptional Children on the effectiveness by which the employee has carried out the above responsibilities.
