Dane County Humane Society is Hiring a Full-Time LTE Camp Counselor for Camp Pawprint Near Madison, WI

We are an open admission shelter accepting all animals that need assistance regardless of age, health status, or temperament. DCHS has an adoption guarantee, meaning all healthy or treatable animals can stay at DCHS as long as it takes to find a loving home.

As one of the nation's leading animal welfare organizations, DCHS offers humane education programs, community-based care for pets, foster care for animals for victims of domestic abuse, a pet food pantry, dog training classes, wildlife rehabilitation, and much more. Do you enjoy working with animals and kids? Are you looking for a fun and exciting job for the summer? Our Camp Counselors are limited-term employees with the responsibility to ensure that Camp Pawprint is a safe, fun, and educational experience. Counselors will lead children in learning about and engaging with various animals. This position involves teaching and supervising campers under the direction of the Humane Educator.

Duties and Responsibilities: 100%

  • Supervise the safety of camp participants at all times
  • Coordinate, lead, and participate in camp activities
  • Teach and supervise campers according to the written program plans, including games, crafts, and guest speaker presentations
  • Help maintain the health and welfare of animals involved in camp activities
  • Provide critical and timely feedback to the Humane Educator and the team throughout camp
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate with parents, DCHS staff, and campers
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment wherever camp activities are held
  • Ensure a fun and educational environment for all participants in Camp Pawprint
  • Assist with set up and clean up of the day’s activities
  • Direct handling and care of classroom animals, not limited to corn snakes, hissing cockroaches, guinea pigs, and rats

Preferred Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Experience working with children, primarily ages 7-12
  • Practical knowledge of and experience caring for domestic animals preferred
  • Must be 16 years or older
  • Must have reliable transportation to Dane County Humane Society, located at 5132 Voges Road, Madison WI
  • Must be available Monday-Friday June 4th-August 23rd, 2024 (except for July 4th & 5th)
  • CPR and first aid certifications preferred (All camp staff get trained in CPR/First Aid at no cost to our counselors if not already certified)
  • If offered a position, candidates must pass a background check run by DCHS
