D.C. TUTORING & MENTORING INITIATIVE is Hiring a Civic Leadership Summer Program Near Washington, DC

If you are a practical idealist, a good communicator – in-person, in writing, or through other media – and want to be part of a small team working to transform education and our civic culture in DC, the Civic Leadership Summer Program is for you!

DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative (DCTMI) is looking for students (undergraduate or graduate) and community members wanting to have a positive impact on the Washington, DC, education landscape and help create a national model for civic transformation. The Civic Leadership Summer Program is an opportunity to develop your leadership skills, gain tangible community organizing experience through face-to-face outreach, and grow in your ability to be a centered, self-aware, kind, and courageous human being and leader.

We are especially interested in finding students who are interested in bringing our model for civic engagement and impact to their colleges or communities outside the DC area and can offer subsidies to assist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • A minimum of 3 hours per week during the summer.
  • Must be available to meet weekly at the following times: Wednesday evening leadership sessions, 7:00-8:30pm (Most will be virtual, but you must be available to commute to in-person sessions as needed.) The schedule may vary in the summer.
  • Must be comfortable spending time outdoors in all weather conditions (excluding extremities) for 5-10 hours a week.
  • Must be available Saturday and Sunday mornings between 9 am and 4 pm for outreach activities.
  • Have periodic availability for tabling or canvassing at different events (local movie nights, tabling at apartment buildings, etc.) which can occur on different nights of the week (Last year, we attended 5 or 6 of them).
  • Weekly one-on-one check-ins to be scheduled based on availability.
  • For team members working more than 3 hours per week: organizing events, helping with administrative tasks, and building a community of volunteers who support DCTMI and its partner organizations.
  • Journalism, video production, communications, and community outreach experience and skills are a plus, but not required to apply.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • $17-23 per hour, plus an hourly bonus to bring your rate up to $26-27/hour for time spent “civic canvassing” at farmers markets or other outdoor spaces or events.
  • Minimum of 3 hours per week, an average of 8 hours a week.
  • Up to twenty percent of weekly hours can be designated for paid self-care time.
  • Weekly leadership development and self-care workshops.
  • DCTMI has a culture of open communication and feedback. Monthly feedback sessions with the possibility for salary increases dependent on performance.
  • Volunteer management and community organizing experience.
  • Be part of a community of shared purpose, building valuable relationships within your team.
  • Opportunity to develop and implement new projects that both advance the mission of DCTMI and the Civic Leadership Project as well as meeting your goals for professional and personal development.
  • Develop a better understanding of and have a lasting impact on the Washington, DC, community.
  • Flexible schedule, except for required weekend activities and evening meetings.
