Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is a community-based not-for-profit community development corporation and settlement house that offers comprehensive housing preservation, youth and family services, career and education, college success, and organizing programs. With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.
Through a participatory planning and community organizing process focused on the rezoning of parts of East New York, residents established the East New York Coalition for Community Advancement and set priorities for the future growth of their neighborhood, including deeply affordable rental housing, affordable homeownership, preservation and growth of small businesses, and strong displacement prevention policies. The part-time Community Organizer will play a critical role in base building for our campaigns which include Housing Justice for East NY and Economic Justice for East NY. The PT Community Organizer is expected to work alongside community organizers in order to build power amongst residents and businesses in Cypress Hills ENY. This position is a part time, 15 hours per week.
Principal Duties:

• Support the East New York Coalition for Community Advancement and Community Organizers in implementing strategies to deepen the affordability of housing being built in East New York, preserve existing affordable housing, protect homeowners and tenants from real estate speculators and house flippers and fight for housing justice.
• Recruit and orient new members.
• Conduct in-person and phone outreach
• Design and distribute outreach materials including flyers, brochures, posters, etc.
• Help facilitate meetings
• Assist in organizing actions such as community forums, press conferences, petition drives and protests
• Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Ability to speak and write Spanish fluently

Compensation:

• $18/hour.
• 15 hours/week Monday - Friday, including some evenings and occasional weekend hours
