THIS ROLE: 

Curtin Maritime is looking to add a Lead Carpenter to our team. We’re looking for an individual who lives by our core values of Innovation, Integrity and Efficiency and wants to help us build out a shipyard carpentry/joinery program and work to improve our fleet.

Our carpentry projects range in size and complexity from building out a shelf in an office or converting shipping containers to professional offices to refurbishing the interior of a ship’s superstructure. The right fit for this role will tackle each project with the same vigor and enthusiasm.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Manage Carpentry projects while using labor from Labor Training Program
    • Communicate with Shipyard Superintendent and Labor Training Coordinators on work plans and sequencing
    • Generate painting work plans and manage timely completion of team assignments
  • Teach new hires while adhering to The Curtin Standard
    • Assist with development of training content for labor programs; participate in training employees
    • Give feedback to employees, and participate in employee performance evaluation process as requested
  • Critical member of the Shipyard Management team, working to collaborate on resource allocation across multiple projects and project sites
    • Plan upcoming work, and coordinate with team on resource allocation
    • Assist with management of large-scale projects
  • Inventory supplies and consumables and work with procurement group to ensure proper stock while minimizing wastage
    • Create a minimum and maximum inventory of paint and paint supplies for yard
    • Set schedule of inventories and maintain via HELM Connect
    • Confer with purchasing department for special projects that require excess supplies
  • Thought partner to work on continuous improvement by introducing new processes, techniques, equipment and materials.
    • Research new technology in coatings systems, techniques and equipment
    • Work with Shipyard team to research and obtain SSPC certifications
    • Build relationships with suppliers and subcontractors

WHO YOU ARE:

Certifications and Other Requirements

  • 10 years of transferable experience in the area of skill carpentry and construction
  • Shipyard Competent Person
  • OSHA 10 Hour Construction
  • Certified Forklift Operator
  • Certified Rigger

Physical Aptitudes

  • The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces
  • Able to work in confined spaces and carry heavy tools for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges, up and down ladders.
  • Must be comfortable entering tanks and other confined spaces
  • Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.)
  • Ability to lift to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work when exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels, and potentially hazardous equipment.
