Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Intramurals, Club Sports, and Fitness Center Operations, the Head Men's Rugby Coach is a professional employee of the College with a primary duty of coaching, management and operations (including administrative functions) of the Curry College Men's Club Rugby Team. The program will be conducted in accordance with all New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU), rules, regulations, and policies. The Head Coach will supervise and delegate certain functions to the Volunteer Coach.

This position is a temporary, academic year appointment with a mutual option for renewal annually. (*If the season is cancelled due to limited participants, this role and compensation will end on the day the season cancellation date).

Essential Functions:

1. Coaching Duties:

  • Coach and manage Men's Club Rugby team; assure skills and game strategies are effectively taught;
  • Create and maintain practice drills;
  • Coordinate the practice schedule with the Director of Fitness and Recreation;
  • Coordinate and schedule games with Director of Fitness and Recreation, USA Rugby and other institutions;
  • Maintain team rosters including contact, emergency and insurance information.

2. Team Administration:

  • Coordinate student athlete NCR memberships, registration with USA Rugby, completion of all Curry paperwork and ensures NERFU compliance;
  • Act as the primary liaison between Curry College and NERFU Rugby;
  • Develop and manage team budget in conjunction with Assistant Director of Intramurals, Club Sports, and Fitness Center Operations;
  • Complete all paperwork in a timely manner (i.e., rosters; eligibility forms; purchase orders; reimbursements, end-of-season reports, etc.);
  • Coordinate with Club E-board and Assistant Director of Fitness and Recreation for transportation and food for away-games;
  • In charge of distribution, collection, and inspection of all related equipment;
  • Meet regularly with Assistant Director of Fitness and Recreation during season and in the offseason.

3. Team Success:

  • Build student athletes' respect for themselves, their teammates, their opponents, their coaches, and their sport. Communicate to student athletes in a positive manner;
  • With assistance from Club E-board, work to create positive team atmosphere and mediate disputes between players;
  • Develop commitment of team members to team success;
  • Work with Club E-board and Volunteer Coaches on game preparation, film review, practice scheduling;
  • Communicate regularly with team in person and via email.

4. Student Success and Retention:

  • Respond effectively to concerns expressed by student athletes about athletic and non-athletic issues, including keeping Assistant Director of Fitness & Recreation informed;
  • Support the colleges recruiting and retention program while maintaining a squad size of student athletes within the range of your sport, minimum 15;
  • Refer students to appropriate office on campus to address concerns (Academic Support, Counseling, Residence Life, Financial Aid). Follow-up when appropriate;
  • Attend Open House dates and Accepted Students Day, if no match is scheduled.

Additional Functions:

  • Comply with NERFU policy, rules, and department policy and procedures;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Fitness and Recreation;
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.
Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum Level 1 or 2 USA Rugby Coach Certification.
  • Experience playing Rugby at the collegiate level.
  • Knowledge of the rules of Rugby as governed by USA Rugby.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations involving students.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to work evening and weekends and some holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
