FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, City University of New York, seeks an accomplished practitioner-educator with expertise in Biology to serve on the faculty and support the culture of teaching and learning across the institution.

This full-time Lecturer position will begin in Fall 2024. For academic year 2024-25, faculty are required to teach a 24-hour course load across Guttman’s two 12-week Fall and Spring semesters and 6-week “Fall II” intersession (visit the Guttman Academic calendar online for dates). Faculty are expected to teach in person although some courses are taught online or in a hybrid format.

For this position, the successful candidate will have teaching expertise in Biology, or a related field and is interested in teaching biology courses within the Science program of study such as, general biology, microbiology, genetics, and biological chemistry.

Guttman faculty are also active members of the College Community through participation in collaborative work initiatives that advance the goals of the College.

ABOUT GUTTMAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is a beacon of innovation and knowledge creation in higher education, a two-year college where evidence-based high-impact practices in curriculum design and delivery permeate the educational model and have yielded graduation rates that are the highest in CUNY’s community college sector and above the national average. The centerpiece of Guttman’s educational model is an integrated first-year core curriculum, where students examine current world issues and use New York City as a living text and laboratory. Thus, connecting information and concepts across multiple disciplines, contexts, and perspectives. This immersive approach equips Guttman students with the foundation of knowledge and skills essential to their intellectual, social, civic, and professional endeavors in and beyond the classroom. The College admitted its first cohort of 300 students in August 2012 and has established an enrollment target of 5,000 students in the coming years. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully. At least two years of successful teaching experience in a college setting (full-time or part-time) required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Biology, Biology/science education or a related field (awarded by start of fall, 2024-2025 academic year) preferred.

  • Minimum of two years documented successful teaching in a college setting in one or more of the following areas: general biology, human biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, genetics, and biological chemistry.

  • Experience with pedagogical practices central to Guttman's educational model such as active learning, project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, experiential education,

  • Demonstrated capacity to use a diverse range of effective instructional strategies and openness to adopting new practices.

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

  • Teaching students of diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds

  • An understanding of community college students’ assets and challenges.

  • Use of current technology as it supports teaching and learning.

  • Excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal, and written and verbal skills

We are particularly looking for candidates to address the following specialized experience and demonstrated knowledge in their application materials:

Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of the literacy experiences of Latinx students and students of color as they engage, confront, and master the English-dominated rhetoric of Academic Writing, and should share Guttman’s commitment to creating learning environments that foster equity, inclusion, and belonging.

  • As a college committed to access and success for all students, faculty should understand the body normativity and disability labeling that often goes unquestioned in the college classroom. Candidates should have demonstrated experience applying the principles of universal design for learning to meet the needs of all learners proactively and with flexibility.

COMPENSATION

$76,870 - $83,764; Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
