Position Overview

Examples of Duties
Staffs a public service point and provides immediate customer assistance
Performs proactive reference, answers complex customer questions about information and technology resources
Performs intermediate troubleshooting of library equipment
Trains the public in the use of library resources and equipment, including online catalog and databases
Resolves intermediate customer complaints; refers more complex issues to branch manager or Adult Services Manager
Knows, enforces, and interprets rules governing the use of the library
Provides in-depth readers’ advisory services
Staffs the online chat reference as assigned
Prepares, markets, presents, and evaluates programming for adult and all-ages audiences, including book clubs and classes on computer skills for the public
Provides one-on-one instruction/training for customers on an as needed basis
Participates in publicity and marketing of library resources and events, including writing library related columns in local publications
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in library science is required.
Trainee Appointment: Trainee applicants must have completed at least 75% of required course work towards an MLS and submit a letter from the Dean of the Library School that states the number of credit hours already obtained and that the candidate can complete all Master’s degree requirements within 12 months.
A formal transcript will be required. College transcripts may be submitted on-line via the attachment feature or mailed to Cumberland County Human Resources, 117 Dick St. Fayetteville, NC 28301.
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Negative drug screen and background check are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of library procedures, collection management, library system and services
Knowledge of readers’ advisory methods and sources
Ability to communicate orally and in writing effectively with co-workers and general public
Ability and knowledge to provide basic library reference services and other customer assistance
Ability to instruct others on the library’s electronic resources and content. Knows library card registration requirements
Ability to instruct customers on use of equipment to include photocopiers, fax, Venda card dispenser, public computer reservation software, and self-checkout as needed and where applicable
Ability to proficiently search the online public catalog
Ability to use computers, competently manipulate keyboard and spell accurately
Ability to operate audiovisual equipment, online public computer catalogs (OPACs), and navigate the Internet and specialized library databases to find information
Ability to initiate basic troubleshooting procedures on a variety of computers, printers, copiers, and fax machines
Ability to organize work and coordinate activities
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public
Ability to develop and present programs for specific age groups as assigned and present information to management and community groups
Ability to use good judgment in the daily delivery of services
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
Ability to address criticism or questions with tact and diplomacy
Ability to define problems, collect data, and establish facts
