Job Description Summary
This is a recruitment for a short-term/temporary position open only to students. This recruitment will be open until the position is filled. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
The Ethnic Studies Department is looking for a Student Research Assistant. The student may work on the San Luis Obispo campus and/or by telework. This position is part-time, approximately 10 hours per week.
About The Project:
The COVID-19 pandemic has made visible existing health disparities and structural vulnerabilities in Latinx communities. Anti-immigrant policies, xenophobia, and settler-colonialism further undermine their health and wellbeing, especially Latinx immigrants and Indigenous peoples. The Student Researcher will be involved in studying how community stakeholders mobilize across sectors to reduce health disparities and increase culturally responsive and multilingual strategies for inclusion and health access. This project builds on years of ethnographic fieldwork and community-engaged scholarship to highlight how advocates and community leaders mobilize in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how those strategies can lead to sustained efforts for health equity. This knowledge is being developed and shared directly with the community, local experts, and relevant stakeholders. This position is temporary and scheduled to end on or before July 28, 2023
Essential Functions & Qualifications
Essential functions:
Support data collection, analysis, writing, and community engagement tasks. Receive relevant mentorship and training for development of research skills. Other assistance might include reviewing class materials, transcription of recorded videos, and working on collaborative solutions to problems.
Qualifications:
Bi-Lingual (Spanish) required, tri-lingual (Mixteco or Purepecha) preferred
Be prepared, present, and punctual for your scheduled hours and team meetings
Assist Instructor in completing research tasks
Exhibit critical thinking skills and willingness to take initiative
Communicate effectively and respectfully
Work productively with community members from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Demonstrate interest in health policy, social movements, and immigrant rights
Work effectively as part of a team
Additional Information
This is a short-term/temporary position. Students currently enrolled at Cuesta College will be given priority, however, applicants must be an enrolled student at any higher education instutution to be considered.
