Job Description

The Superintendent of Maintenance is responsible for the efficient operation of the maintenance and purchasing/inventory control functions in the Hartford Division. This position is under the general direction of the Sr. Director of Maintenance in the handling of day-to-day responsibilities, including employee’s discipline and most labor union matters. Technical assistance and maintenance policy administration.

Examples of Duties

  • Responsible for directing the day-to-day operations required to store, service, and repair the vehicle fleet assigned to the division. This includes all duties necessary to administer servicing and cleaning programs, preventative maintenance programs, correction of mechanical defects, major repair of vehicles, rebuilding of components and inventory control.
  • This position is responsible for the safe and proper maintenance and security of the buildings and grounds of the division, including all structural and mechanical systems associated with the operation of the facility.
  • Prepares plans and estimates for major facility improvements and repairs; acts as project director during the course of work.
  • Directs the work of the Maintenance Supervisors, inventory personnel, and all secretarial/clerical personnel assigned to the maintenance function.
  • Prepares daily schedules of buses to meet the demands for scheduled bus service including the availability of buses for limited service, and equipment to be held for servicing.
  • Administers the Labor Agreement for bargaining unit employees; resolves employees disputes; responsible for discipline and counseling of union and staff employees when necessary to apply Company’s rules and regulations. Responsible for planning for work force composition and screening, interviewing and selecting candidates for maintenance positions.
  • Attends required training and maintains certification to oversee licensing, certification and operation of all environmental issues and compliance.
  • Responsible for preparing reports and correspondence as necessary, prepares or directs staff to prepare data for monthly reports.
  • Assist other departments and divisions as assigned.
  • Assists in managing problems and emergencies involving the Maintenance Department on a 24/7 basis.
  • Must be able to responsibly record, report, investigate and respond to any maintenance accidents or incidents.
  • Work cooperatively with all levels of personnel.
  • Attends in-service training, seminars or other opportunities for professional development as made available by the Agency. Provides training for Agency personnel as required. Actively participates in staff meetings, trainings, etc.
  • Has thorough working knowledge of Agency policies and procedures, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Manage the first step of employee discipline.
  • Will participate in the interview process, and the selection process for new positions.
  • On board coaching and evaluations of the employees as assigned.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum possession of a bachelor’s degree or technical training certificate in Maintenance, Transportation, Management, Business, Public Administration or a closely related field and five (5) years of relevant work experience in automotive or heavy vehicle repair, mechanic engineering and/or training is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience on a year for year basis can be substituted for the 4-year degree requirement.
  • A minimum of 2 years of maintenance managerial or supervisory experience in varied phases of fleet maintenance and repair is required.
  • This position requires extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of fleet, building and inventory management, and the ability to administer the labor contract in conjunction with Company rules and regulations.
  • Experience in managing employees in a union environment, interviewing, hiring, training, employee development, employee discipline up to and including termination.
  • Knowledge of public transit operations, policies and procedures, Company, Local, State and Federal rules and regulations, traffic laws, routes, union contract provisions, customer service skills, transportation technologies, and other related information is required.
  • Knowledge of the advanced principles of supervision, knowledge of progressive discipline processes, including demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, build commitment to goals, offer instruction, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to multitask, manage multiple employees, ability to conduct training when necessary.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required (CDL is desirable). Individual may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.
  • Proficient in software programs (word processing, spreadsheet and database), Internet applications and utilization of all relevant office equipment.
  • Must be able to handle confidential information.
  • The ability to prioritize projects and to work both independently and in a team environment.
