The Chemist I will be responsible for the collection of waste chemicals and Universal Wastes from the CDC laboratories and workplaces and transport them containers to the appropriate storage areas. The Technician/Chemist will become familiar with chemical segregation such that he/she will assist the Project Manager (PM) with placing chemical wastes into temporary storage for offsite shipment. The Technician will assist the Project Manager in the entry and compilation of waste generation tracking data into the client's proprietary data base. The Technician's understanding of applicable environmental regulations such that he/she will perform compliance inspections of waste accumulation areas and provide follow-up reports to the PM. The Technician will be trained to be knowledgeable of available spill clean-up materials/procedures and assist the PM with the clean-up in the event that a spill occurs while waste is being transported to the waste storage areas.
The Chemist will perform an inspection of the clients Spill Control Centers (SCC) in compliance with the client Project Work Scope. SCC inspection reports will be provided to the PM monthly. Using materials provided by the Client, the Chemist will be responsible of restocking any SCC with required supplies on as needed basis. The Chemist will support the client's sustainability program by collecting for recyclable materials generated by CSS chemical waste management activities. These materials include but are not limited to empty plastic and glass containers.
Candidates must have an Associate's degree (Bachelor's preferred) in a scientific discipline that qualifies them to evaluate hazards associated with chemicals and chemical wastes. Examples include: Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Biology, Environmental Science, etc. Qualified individual must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently. Candidates may not have a criminal record. They must be able to pass a background check, allowing them to obtain an HHS/CDC site badge. Individual must have a valid driver's license.
PREFERRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE Good knowledge and understanding of all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to the Environmental Services Industry including experience with RCRA and DOT regulations. Introductory knowledge of high hazard materials management/assessment and cylinder handling. Must have 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with recurrent training. Must be in good physical condition in order to regularly lift 50 pound containers, load trucks during chemical and hazardous waste shipments, handle 55 gallon drums and them using a drum cart, and respond to chemical spills as necessary. Excellent internal skill necessary to effectively communicate with the Project Manager and client personnel. Working knowledge or Microsoft Office suite software.
