    • May be expected to travel where the project requires (multi-state opportunities)

Primary function of a Superintendent in Training 

Superintendent in Training will learn strategies to assist in working with the project manager and general superintendent to coordinate planning, scheduling, and construction of projects. Learning objectives will include meeting the owners, designers, and Crowder’s safety, schedule, budget and quality goals. Assigned project responsibilities include, but are not limited to safety, schedule, quality, profit, and loss. The SIT program is intended to be a lengthy quality training program working through all aspects of future solo responsibilities as a superintendent. This program is very individualized.

Typical training (professional and OJT) will include but are not limited to:

Safety

  • Learn to examine and inspect work progress, equipment and construction sites to verify safety and ensure that specifications are met.
  • Learn to promote and enforce safety first and foremost.
  • Learn to understand how to look for potential safety issues on the project.
  • Stay current on safe work practices and OSHA standards.
  • Work with the General Superintendent to plan any major crane picks ensuring all Crowder policies are met.
  • Hold all employees accountable for practicing and enforcing safety every day.
  • Enforce Pre-Task Planning sheets are completed daily and signed for safety.

Project Execution & Paperwork

  • Learn to plan, schedule, and coordinate with subcontractors.
  • Coordinate efforts with other Superintendents and Foreman.
  • Understand how to review project approved submittals, plans, and specifications to verify accurate and new developments.
  • Work with the project team to develop a project schedule.
  • Learn to create and update, on a weekly basis, a two-week schedule showing what work will be accomplished.
  • Learn to project equipment needs and monitor rental periods.
  • Understand and utilize all internal resources available.
  • Clearly express to the project work force the project goals and expectations.
  • Do take-offs of formwork and ensure that form materials are on the project when needed.
  • Learn how to calculate concrete pour quantities and schedule pours with the concrete supplier.
  • Release major materials (i.e. rebar, pads, girders, joints, etc.) so that they will be on the job when needed.
  • Order small tools and expendables (i.e. nails, saws, drills, wall ties, etc.) in advance and assure that they are available when needed.
  • Training on learning how to monitor job costs.
  • Complete all required paperwork accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Recognize the need for assistance and ask for it.
  • Become the foremost technical authority on the project.
  • Understand how to look for ways to be more efficient and profitable.
  • Maintain good relations with the owner.
  • Administer Company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a high level of professional ethics and demand the same of all employees.

Personnel

  • Learn to project labor requirements, interview, and recommend personnel for hire as needed.
  • Motivate the work force, reward employees for good work, and take appropriate measures when work is mediocre.
  • Initiate formal and informal feedback conversations.
  • Initiate conversations regarding the workers’ future plans or goals within the company.
  • Learn to perform yearly evaluations of supervisory personnel and review the same with the Foreman and Leadman.
  • Develop knowledge and plans to train employees.
  • Learn to promote training initiatives and Career Builder in support of Affirmative Action requirements.
  • Train on how to handle employee concerns and complaints regarding conflicts and performance.

 Quality and Production

  • Learn how to immediately address any and all quality or production issues.
  • Understand when to confer with supervisory and engineering personnel and inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods including but not limited to design, lack of productivity, and work interfaces.
  • Learn to inspect work in progress to insure consistency in workmanship and specifications.
  • Responsible correct initial completion of work by crew.
  • Maintain a high level of professional ethics and demand the same of all employees.

  • Pipe Crew Specific Tasks and Training

  • Process Equipment Specific Tasks and Training
  • Dewatering and By-Pass Pumping Specific Tasks and Training
  • Other Training Opportunities as needed

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

  • Four years of experience constructing water and wastewater or related experience and/or a construction/civil engineering 4-year degree.
  • Minimum four years construction management and/or craft supervision experience in similar facility construction (preferred).
  • Knowledge of all aspects of construction including technology, equipment, and methods.
  • Excellent communication, organization, motivation, and leadership skills essential.

Physical Requirements

  • Good vision, with or without aid, including depth perception, clarity of greater than 20’ and less than 3’, and an entire field of vision/periphery.
  • Walk up or down slopes and/or ramps, long distances (more than one mile throughout the day), and on uneven surfaces.
  • Sit 2-4 hours daily and Stand 2-4 hours daily.
  • Maintain dexterity including good balance; ability to seize, hold, and manipulate an object in one’s hand; capable of pinch type activities with fingers; and reach with extended arms in any direction.
  • Crouch, kneel, and bending for more than 5 minutes at any one time repeating the motion more than 2 times per minute.
  • Talk and hear (with or without aid).

Physical Environment Factors

  • Work outdoors most of the work day.
  • Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, scanner, etc. and a motor vehicle for company business.
  • Ability to travel including a normal commute to and from the jobsite/office during work hours and overnight stays while working away from home for extended periods of time.
  • Tolerate exposure to noise levels that may require the employee to shout in order to be heard, exposure to vibrating movements to the extremities or entire body, and work in open elevations more than 6’ about the ground via scaffolding/suspension.
