Position Overview

The selected candidate will work in a safety sensitive shop or field setting diagnosing and repairing heavy highway road construction equipment for the use of road construction.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Lubrication: Oil, air and fuel filtration, grease points and capacities, inspections techniques to detect abnormal conditions.
  • Paint and Body: Body work and painting procedures.
  • Machine Shop Familiarization: Welding and burning equipment and operations of lathes, saws, shapers, grinder and presses.
  • Injector-Governor: The operation and service of fuel injector pumps and nozzles, and engine governors.
  • Water Cooled Engine Rebuild: Assist in the complete overhaul and testing of gas and diesel engines.
  • Transmissions and Rear Ends: Assist in the complete overhaul of the various mechanisms used to transfer engineer horsepower to active effort.
  • Air Cooled Engines: Assist in the complete overhaul of the various air cooled engines and their applications.
  • Heavy Equipment Parts Familiarization: The Parts Catalogs, procurement, handling storage, and cost of heavy equipment parts.
  • Starters, Generators & Voltage Regulators: Assist in the complete overhaul of the various starters, generators and voltage regulators.
  • Heavy Equipment Shop: Assist in the repair and overhaul of the various heavy equipment which will include crawler and wheel tractors, crawler and portable cranes, brooms, front end loaders, rollers, subgrade mixers, motor graders, compactors, pumps, and air compressors their power plants, transmissions, controls and accessories.
  • Heavy Equipment Field: The role of the field mechanic helper is to assist in the repairs necessary in the field and perform preventative maintenance practices necessary to increase service life of the equipment.
  • Requires the following Motions: climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, stretching, driving, riding, pushing, pulling, vibrating, twisting, kneeling, walking, standing, lying, rolling, reaching, and hammering.
  • Requires lifting of up to 50lbs. Frequency of lifting depends on repairs being made and item being repaired.
  • Use of tools such as wrench, screwdriver, hammer, saw, file/raps, drift pin, pry bar, sledge hammer, hoist, jack grinder, paint sprayer, press, cutting torch, pneumatic wrench and impact tools, gauges and measuring devices.
  • Overtime often required. May be exposed to extremes of hot, cold and wet weather.
  • Requires riding to and from job. If required to drive a company vehicle must meet the APAC Driver Qualification Standards. In some instances such as a heavy truck mechanic, must have Commercial Driver’s License and proper in accordance with 49 CFR 383.91; heavy straight vehicle B. In vehicles with GVWR of 10,001 to 26,000 candidate will be required to pass DOT related exams regulated by State and Federal laws. Air brakes skills test required for all vehicles that have air brakes.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma / general education degree (GED) required. Some college/technical school/related experience desired.
  • Be at least age 18 years of age due to nature of working environment

5 Years plus of experience with:

  • Cat ET Heavy Equipment diagnostic software
  • Komatsu Heavy Equipment diagnostic software
  • Cummins Insite Heavy Equipment diagnostic software
  • Prosis Volvo Heavy Equipment diagnostic software

Work Requirements

  • Pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Pass a pre-employment Fit for Work physical.
  • Be able to provide valid documentation for the I-9 Immigration document.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times.
  • Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to work at the designated start time.
  • Be able to work overtime when required.
  • Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
  • Safely operate various type of equipment related to work requirements.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and meet the qualifications of the fleet safety program.
  • Must be willing to travel to each jobsite using personal transportation and work away from home when required.
  • Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and / or MSHA.
  • Climb: ascend/descend using three point entries into cab of equipment.
  • Lift: exertion of physical strength to move objects (50-70 lbs.) from one level to another.
  • Carry: hold or rest weighted objects (50-70 lbs.) directly on hands, arms, shoulders, or back while walking from one location to another.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Climb: ascend/descend three point entry into cab of equipment.
  • Lift: exertion of physical strength to move objects (50-70 lbs.) from one level to another.
  • Carry: hold or rest weighted objects (50-70 lbs.) directly on hands, arms, shoulders, or back while walking from one location to another.
  • Bend: flexion of the upper trunk forward while standing and knees extended or knees flexed when sitting.
  • Push/Pull: Exertion of force on or against object (70 lbs.) to move it from one location to another.
  • Reach: extend the hands and arms in any direction.
  • Kneel: maintain the body in an erect posture while resting body weight on one or both knees.
  • Stoop: flexion of the upper body forward at the waist with partial flexion of the knee while standing.
  • Twist: using hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers.

 

 

Work Environment

  • Noise: sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible injury to sense of hearing.
  • Fumes: vaporous emissions, usually odorous, thrown off as the result of combustion or chemical reaction.
  • Gases: carbon monoxide and ozone.
  • Dust: airborne particles of any kind such as dust.
  • Hazards: closeness to moving mechanical parts; slipping while ascending/descending equipment cab; exposure to high temperatures during the summer and cold temperatures during the winter.
  • Protection: required to wear hard hat, safety glasses (prescription or non-prescription) with side shields, safety vest, gloves, steel-toed safety shoes, hearing protection.
