Position Purpose

Quarto Publishing is seeking a creative, highly motivated, and exceptionally well-organized Designerwith a strong interest in consumer publishing and an understanding of packaging to create inspiring and inventive books, kits, and more for the Custom, Proprietary, and Value team. 

The Designer will create visually captivating covers and uniquely designed interiors for highly illustrated books including workbooks and journals and kits/book plus, from conceptualizing design options to processing final files for the Chartwell imprint and Custom and Proprietary team. Chartwell produces value editions of books across a wide range of subjects including cooking, lifestyle, Mind/Body/Spirit, guided journals, history, classics, and transportation.

• The ideal candidate is someone who lives and breathes creation & ideation and keeps a pulse on trends,color forecasts, competing products, all while remaining commercially savvy.
• Is self-motivated, proactive, detail-oriented, receptive to feedback and learns quickly.
• Able to tailor project designs flexibly to meet needs of audience.
• Can contract and work with freelance collaborators, including photographers, illustrators, and production artists.
• Ensure projects and files comply with company standards for schedule & quality.
• A strong communicator& relationship builder with the ability to balance varying responsibilities while collaborating with editorial team and illustrators.

• Exceptional designer. You will conceptualize and design covers, interiors, and sales materials; prepare printer mechanicals.
• Manage color printing process and preflight and answer queries from the printer.
• Computer skills. You are great with Adobe Suite, PowerPoint, Canva and similar programs. 

Position Specifications

Required

• Knowledge of publishing with an emphasis on book and book plus development and production with an ability to identify/evaluate successful product design.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating page and cover design abilities.
• Demonstrated experience in managing freelance resources with excellent communication. 
• Knowledge of printing processes and ability to review files with regard to technical integrity.
• High level of proficiency of the Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator in addition to Suitcase Fusion, Flight check, Microsoft Word.
• A proven record of meeting deadlines and budgets. 
• Ability to work efficiently on multiple projects and effectively prioritize within tight deadlines.

Required

• A minimum of 7 to 10 years’ design experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field. 

Desired

• Experience with illustrated publishing and conceptualizing products with components for children and adults.
• Digital image manipulation and retouching skills.
• Working ties to a network of freelance resources.
