Teacher -- Assistant Group Supervisor

General Position Description

The Teacher is responsible for developing a cohesive teaching team, coordinating the curriculum, and managing the day-to-day operational activities of the classroom. Teachers must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development in order to ensure a safe and stimulating classroom environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Teacher must be skilled in communicating with both children and adults in order to meet the needs of the children, effectively guide teacher assistants, and resolve parental concerns. The teacher must be able to handle the physical demands of working in childcare, including but not limited to standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, bending, and lifting.

An assistant group supervisor is responsible for the implementation of daily activities under the guidance of the group supervisor and coordinating daily activities and supervising aides in the absence of the group supervisor.

Floater Responsibilities

Floaters move between various rooms based on the needs of the children and business. It is the responsibility of the floater to complete the room specific tasks and ask for assistance from regular classroom staff. Floaters assume the responsibilities of the staff that they are covering. Floaters are required to assist in all classroom tasks and engage with children. Active supervision is required at all times.

Floater schedules vary based on the needs of the business. Floaters should be prepared to work in any classroom on any day. Whenever possible, floaters will be informed of their assigned room(s) prior to the start of the day, but this assignment may change due to other staffing issues and ratio requirements.

Department of Human Services Assistant Group Supervisor Educational Requirements

(1) A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field.

(2) A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, including 600 or more hours of secondary training described in § 3270.31(c) (relating to age and training).

(3) A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, 15 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 1 year of experience with children.

(4) A high school diploma or a general education development certificate and completion of a post-secondary training curriculum described in § 3270.31(c).

(5) A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 2 years experience with children.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Minimum 2 years of professional child care experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • High energy and the ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment.
  • A strong understanding of child development.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must clear full background check and must pass health screening.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement educational curriculum by developing classroom activities based on developmentally appropriate practices and early learning standards.
  • Lead by example; encourage teaching team success through modeling and coaching.
  • Plan individual and group age-appropriate activities to actively engage children and encourage social, cognitive and emotional growth.
  • Create and maintain a nurturing and child-centered environment.
  • Maintain frequent communication with parents/guardians through informal discussions, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Ensure all center policies and state regulations are met.
  • Ensure a healthy classroom environment – including maintaining appropriate hygiene and cleanliness standards and safety and security of children.
  • Supervise teacher assistants and classroom volunteers to ensure they are following planned activities, hygiene and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate records, forms and files.
  • Maintain personal professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement.

This position reports to the Center Director.
