Position Description


Position: Teacher, Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG)

Reports to: Principal, Student Programming Coordinator

Terms of Employment: 10 months

Pay Grade: Beginning $35,000 Annually plus Local

Supplement

Pay Range: $35,000 - $58,240 annually

FLSA Status: Exempt


Nature of Work

Under general supervision, plans, organizes and presents direct and indirect instruction to meet the academic, intellectual, social, and emotional needs of gifted and potentially gifted students. The employee works to identify students, promotes advanced learning opportunities for all students, and collaborates with school personnel to ensure differentiation for all AIG learners is provided. The AIG teacher also assists with maintaining record keeping related to the district’s plan for Academically and Intellectually Gifted students.


Education and Experience

Minimum of Bachelor's degree from regionally accredited college/university in subject area

Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable):

Must hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator's License in AIG or able to obtain the AIG license within the provisional licensure period


Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

  • Serves as an advocate for the AIG students.
  • Creates and implements differentiated curricular experiences appropriate for gifted education, including opportunities for enrichment, extension and acceleration of the curriculum.
  • Plans a program of study, employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Supports classroom teachers of AIG students by supplying instructional and differentiation strategies,instructional activities, and resources.
  • Monitors AIG students’ progress throughout the year and maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Screens, refers, and collects data for the gifted identification process. Request testing and schedule Talent Identification Match (TIM) meetings as needed.
  • Supports the social and emotional needs of AIG students.
  • Enlightens and encourages student awareness of opportunities outside of the regular classroom.
  • Helps disseminate information about the AIG program to parents and the community.
  • Sets achievement goals based on sub-group data.
  • Facilitates staff development to ensure school staff is aware of best practices for AIG students.
  • Meets with individual parents and parent groups as requested and required
  • Attends AIG Specialists’ Professional Learning Community meetings
  • Follows district AIG plan, practices, and directives
  • Supports district initiatives
  • Assists with the evaluation of the Plan for Academically and Intellectually Gifted
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the unique needs of gifted learners
  • Knowledge of the unique academic, intellectual, social, and emotional development of gifted learners from diverse cultural and ethnic groups.
  • Skilled in assessment and using its data for teaching and learning.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and continuously improve instruction.
  • Ability to assist classroom teachers in developing differentiated instruction for gifted learners
  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools, including technology.
  • Ability to manage instructional time and student behavior.
  • Ability to consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and the community to enhance the learning of students.
  • Ability to coordinate the AIG identification process at assigned school(s).
  • Ability to interact professionally within the educational environment.
  • Ability to motivate underachieving gifted learners.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to receive and perform instructions, assignments and directions from supervisors.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The

employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,

peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Employees in this job must be energetic and flexible and possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with records

processes, and do extensive reading and research. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light work.
