Summer Faculty – Horizons-Upward Bound

Founded by philanthropists George and Ellen Booth in 1904, Cranbrook Educational Community is one of the world’s leading centers of education, science, and art. The mission of the Horizons-Upward Bound program is to prepare students who have limited opportunities from the Detroit Metropolitan area to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. HUB academically supports the efforts of the students’ home school by providing services that assist students in pursuing and achieving their dreams and goals for their academic endeavors and beyond.

Cranbrook’s Horizons Upward Bound (HUB) program is currently seeking enthusiastic teachers to join its Summer Faculty for the summer program that runs June 23 – August 3, 2024. Personal commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access is a critical quality for HUB program faculty. We are seeking faculty with a desire to set high expectations, deliver exceptional learning experiences, and a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of our students.

All Summer Faculty will be required to attend Professional Development from June 17 – June 21. This is a temporary position ending on August 9, 2024. 

The Horizons-Upward Bound Faculty position is a temporary teaching position during the TRIO Horizons-Upward Bound Summer Component for students rising in grades 9 - 12. The program runs Monday - Friday, and the typical teaching day is from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. In addition to teaching the content of their specific position, teachers are also expected to attend professional development, collect student performance data and participate in development of individual student learning plans.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluates the content area skills of individual students to determine level of need.
  • Carries out ongoing assessment of student academic needs in content area.
  • Writes, modifies and delivers Summer Program curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Consults with other content teachers during team meetings, advising on strategies and activities that may be used to enhance a student’s academic needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with experience teaching in content area of position.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work effectively with and display sensitivity toward a diverse community of students.
  • The ability to be a team player.
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with low-income and first-generation students.
  • Special consideration will be given to former students of any TRIO program.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and behaves in accordance with Cranbrook’s mission, goals, and values.
  • Exhibits flexibility and willingness to learn.

Starting rate of pay is $32.29 per hour.
