Project Overview:
Located in Southeastern Washington State, on the Hanford reservation, The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.
The WTP project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.
Position Summary:
The Mechanical Designer is a working part of the Mechanical Handling team designing the areas of material handling equipment, treatment, and vitrification systems, and/or supporting utilities. You will be preparing 3D Models, detail drawings, design proposal drawings, and simulations. The ideal candidate will have some experience in mechanical handling or equipment procurement. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.
Responsibilities:
  • Working on CAD software, such as Solidworks, Microstation and IGRIP, to create drawings and models in line with the design drawings and specifications.
  • Creating designs in accordance with company regulations and client standards and values.
  • Perform work using industry standard application programs and appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools (Solidworks, IGRIP, Microstation).
  • Support the procurement of equipment by developing procurement packages, reviewing quotations and evaluating them technically, review of vendor submittals and resolution of technical issues during the procurement of mechanical equipment.
  • Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
Qualification – Education:
  • Level 1 - BS degree in Mechanical, Mechanical Technology, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering from an accredited university or college with 1 year of related experience.
  • Level 2 - BS degree in Mechanical, Mechanical Technology, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering from an accredited university or college with 3 years of related experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Engineering-in-training (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Experience using CAD (both 2-D and 3-D) such as Solidwords, Microstation and IGRIP.
  • Familiar with effort required to prepare standard discipline deliverables and knows how to prepare standard engineering budgets and schedules within discipline.
  • Experience in equipment design analysis in DOE or commercial nuclear facilities.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
