Position Summary

The Trainee position is an entry level skilled craft position with a line of progression. Steps through the line of progression will require successful completion of training and on the job proficiency demonstrations. All trainees Pull call duty's, work scheduled and unscheduled overtime, be available for storm restoration and deploy out of town on mutual assistance with cps crews for 2 weeks when events occur. Trainee areas:

Distribution Overhead (OH) - Construction & maintenance of overhead electric distribution infrastructure - primary & secondary line work (poles, transformers, electric conductors, electric meters). Overhead trainee in Civil progresses to All Equipment Operator, Overhead in Craft progress to Journeyman/Foreman and Overhead goes up in bucket or climb poles when you progress to Apprentice Journeyman & Journeyman.

Distribution Underground and Downtown Network (UIO) - Underground - Construction & maintenance of underground electric distribution infrastructure; Downtown Network - Could work in downtown vaults (confined space). UIO Civil Trainee progresses to Operator and UIO Craft Trainee progresses to Journeyman. Maintains and operates all Underground Civil Support equipment, crane, easy hauler, mini excavators, mini skid steers, backhoes, rock saws, ladder saws and loaders. Coordinates all work with the Underground Civil Support Foreman and URD crews.

Substation and Transmission (S&T) - Construction and maintenance of the high voltage infrastructure utilized to bring the electricity from Generation (power plants) to Transmission (higher voltage) to Substations (step down voltage). S&T Civil Trainee Employees will start as a General Trainee in the Civil craft and learn needed skills to construct all substation/transmission below grade infrastructure. Must also obtain a fixed and swing cab NCCCO crane operator license prior to the end of the 3rd year from date of hire. The Trainee will progress to positions of Operator All Equipment and Foreman Civil Support through line of progression. S&T Craft Trainee Employees will start as an Electrician Trainee in Substation Construction and will rotate through the various Substation areas as they learn the needed skills to construct and maintain high voltage substation equipment. Trainee will work in proximity to voltages ranging from 345kV to 120V. The Trainee will progress to positions of Apprentice Electrician, Substation Electrician, and Electrician Foreman through line of progression.

Gas - The General Trainee (Gas) is an entry level position that completes work orders associated with providing gas service to residential and commercial customers. Perform the initial customer contact to determine the actual problem and make a judgment on the criticality of repairs required. Turn gas meters (Commercial/Residential) on and/or off. Conduct investigations for gas leaks, check gas pressure, light appliances and inspect for gas code compliance. Set, repair, and replace gas meters, rebuild risers and regulators, install regulators. Turn on/off residential electric meters and all types of gas meters. Entering work orders, Vehicle fueling and basic maintenance, familiarity with CPS gas procedures and standards, attends and successfully completes a 12-week Trainee course.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Trainee OH, UIO & S&T

  • When not operating equipment will assist foreman, and crew leader with daily duties
  • Operate any and all CPS rental equipment (i.e. Excavator, Front Loader, Back Hoe, Easy Hauler, Dump Truck, skid loader, and Crane) required to complete construction assignments for EDS and other departments throughout the company
  • Relieves Equipment Operator of his duties as needed or operate heavy equipment when more than one operator is needed
  • Assist the Underground Civil Support Foreman in giving direction to the Underground Civil Support crew
  • Work collaboratively with the URD crews
  • Works in and around energized and de-energized URD or Substation equipment
  • Works 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (5-day work week) with overtime when necessary and Call duty
  • Substation: 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 6:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. depending on area (4, 10-hour work days per week) with overtime when necessary and Call duty
  • Substation Trainee will rotate between various Substation areas to gain required experience
  • Trainee will also assist Journeyman with daily task and duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Trainee Gas

  • Turn gas meters (Commercial/Residential) on and/or off. Conduct investigations for gas leaks, check gas pressure, light appliances and inspect for gas code compliance
  • Set, repair, and replace gas meters, rebuild risers and regulators, install regulators
  • Turn on/off residential electric meters and all types of gas meters
  • Drive CPS truck to all job sites
  • Entering work orders and using MDT
  • Vehicle fueling and basic maintenance
  • When not operating equipment will assist foreman and crew leader with daily duties
  • Operate any and all CPS equipment (i.e. Mini Excavator, Back Hoe, and Dump Truck) required to complete construction assignments for Gas and other departments throughout the company
  • Assist the Foreman in giving direction to the Construction crew
  • Work collaboratively with the different areas in Gas Operations & Construction
  • Different work schedules (4- 5-day work week) (8 or 10 hour days) Holidays, Nights, Weekends with overtime when necessary and Call duty
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Must pass Mechanical, Reading and Math Aptitude test to be considered for an interview
For candidates interested in Sub-Station Civil Construction:
Must obtain a NCCCO Lic (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) Fixed cab & swing cab cranes within first 36 months & maintain cert while a Substation Gen Trainee & Equip Oper. Failure to do so will result in termination or demotion.
A valid Texas driver's license with a history of safe driving record in accordance with CPS Energy policies, procedures, safety standards and applicable laws and regulations.
Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (Class A) within 120 days of being hired and have a safe driving record
Ability to drive various sizes of company CDL and non-CDL vehicles
Ability to work in and around energized equipment
Ability to climb in and out of trenches and work in high elevations
Ability to work in confined spaces such as man holes and vaults
Ability to read, write, and understand verbal and written instructions
Ability to read and understand equipment manuals
Ability to read design sketches, one-line diagrams, blue prints and schematics
Ability to transport needed tools, equipment and materials to/from and around work site
Ability to understand load charts for safe crane operations
Ability to understand safety and company policies and standards
Ability to distinguish colors
Clean tools, equipment, materials and specified work areas as needed
Experience working outdoors in a construction environment
Follow specific work orders as given by skilled worker or foreman
Basic mathematics and measurements skill
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Construction Procedures including blue prints, construction drawings, and sketches
  • Experience operating construction equipment (i.e. Mini-Excavator, Front Loader, Back Hoe, Easy Hauler, and Dump Truck)
