Position Summary

Washington University in St. Louis seeks an advancement professional for the position of Associate Director of Medical Advancement supporting the School of Medicine through alumni giving.
The Washington University-School of Medicine team strives to advance the mission of Washington University and the School of Medicine by encouraging a culture of philanthropy amongst alumni. The Associate Director will develop strategies to increase philanthropic support for the School of Medicine by utilizing meaningful portfolio management cycle strategies.
The Associate Director will manage a caseload of annual and leadership prospects in the St. Louis region and with the possibility of a small assigned geographic territory based on the caseload. The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director will focus on building meaningful relationships to grow the major gift pipeline; increasing annual fund support to the School of Medicine and working in collaboration with and in support of colleagues across the University and Medical Advancement.
The Associate Director of Medical Advancement reports to the Senior Director of Advancement, Medical Alumni for the School of Medicine.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • Develop and manage a portfolio of annual and leadership gift prospects. Develop and execute thoughtful, innovative, and individualized strategies for cultivating and soliciting high-priority donors and prospects to move individualized giving into major gift prospects.
  • Development work will focus on alumni throughout the School of Medicine. Engage prospects in both the St. Louis region and possibly key cities across the United States.
  • Meet all development goals jointly set with the Senior Director of Medical Advancement. Metrics will focus on meaningful contacts, qualifications, number of proposals submitted, and dollars raised.
  • Strengthen relationships with existing donors; ensure meaningful stewardship; convey to donors that WUSM and its leaders care deeply about its supporters and appreciate their contributions; demonstrate the impact of their support.
  • Create compelling and inspiring opportunities to further engage prospective donors in understanding the importance and impact of philanthropic support.

Other Functions

  • Build collaborative partnerships and work in coordination with counterparts from University Advancement, medical annual giving, alumni relations, and stewardship/ donor relations to ensure a comprehensive approach to engaging with alumni.
  • Undertake special projects and assignments to advance the mission of Washington University-School of Medicine.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Three to five years of successful fundraising experience within academic medicine, higher education, healthcare, or related field.
  • Project leadership skills, with value placed on organizational loyalty, commitment, pride, integrity, mutual respect, and collegial openness.
  • Honesty, integrity, and enthusiasm.
  • Very strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically, and then implement effectively.
  • Demonstrated passion for initiating meetings and developing relationships with prospects.
  • General knowledge of, or willingness to become familiar with academic medicine fundraising.
  • Deep appreciation for and the ability to articulate the mission and aspirations of Washington University and the School of Medicine.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal constituents.
  • Capacity to listen carefully, learn quickly, and work effectively.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with high-net-worth individuals.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across development offices, and to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Comfort working in an environment that emphasizes measurable fundraising goals.
  • Ability to travel, if needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of three years of related experience.

Salary Range

$57,300.00 - $97,700.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
