As an EHS Trainee, we help you build your career in Environmental Health to gain training and work under close supervision in all aspects of the EHS profession. These positions are responsible for learning to perform the necessary tasks to protect public health, serve the community, and support the functions of the Environmental Health Section. This includes beach monitoring,body art parlors,cannabis facilities,childhood lead prevention,detention facilities, disaster preparedness, food facilities, medical waste facilities,organized camps, recreational facilities, solid waste, and water and stormwater systems. As an EHS Trainee, you will communicate regularly with your supervisor to calibrate expectations and ensure that a consistent approach is maintained. You will also interact with the public and other agencies and learn to: 
  • Conduct inspection and document findings
  • Review and interpret codes related to Environmental Health Programs
  • Educate the public and implement enforcement when necessary
Environmental Health staff generally work day shifts from Monday to Friday and may be asked to occasionally work weekends and evenings to conduct field inspections at temporary events and investigate complaints. As many functions occur outdoors, staff should be prepared to work in a variety of conditions from fresh and ocean water sampling, to solid waste inspections at transfer stations and food safety inspections at restaurants in various weather conditions. Peak work activity periods are typically from May through October with ongoing routine food inspections and then starting the bulk of pool inspections, community events inspections, and organized camp inspections. The ideal candidates will possess:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college, including 30 semester units of basic science coursework
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse customer base 
  • The ability to adjust to a variety of business conditions while communicating professionally with the public orally and in writing
  • The ability to research an issue, prepare supporting documentation, and present these findings in a meaningful way
  • An interest in doing administrative office work (e.g. inputting work time daily, completing reports, uploading supporting documentation, etc.) that supports routine work
  • Intermediate MS Office skills including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
As an EHS Trainee, your employment would be limited to a maximum of 36 months. Within that period, you are expected to obtain a certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) issued by the State of California. After you obtain your California REHS certificate, and based upon your performance and mastery of the Trainee position, you would then be eligible for promotion to Environmental Health Specialist I, within three years from your appointment as an EHS Trainee. EHS Trainees serve a one-year probationary period. Any combination of education, training, and experience that would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities stated herein. Normally, this would include:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in environmental health science, biology, chemistry, physics, microbiology or a related subject, as required by state law, to obtain registration as an Environmental Health Specialist.

Experience: There is no experience requirement.

Special Qualifications: Possession of a certificate issued by the state of California indicating that the person is an approved Environmental Health Specialist Trainee by the time of appointment, and possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist as required by the State of California's Health and Safety Code within thirty-six months of appointment.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required, depending upon assignment, to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge of: sanitation science, requirements and procedures and the methods and procedures used in inspecting, investigating and correcting unsanitary conditions; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing environmental health and safety; principles and practices of public health; principles of general chemistry, physics, microbiology and biology; methods of gathering and analyzing data.

Ability to: learn to plan, organize and carry out research, analyze, and evaluate data and make recommendations based on findings; learn to detect unsanitary conditions and public health hazards and secure correction through education, voluntary compliance, or legal enforcement; prepare comprehensive reports; communicate verbal and written ideas clearly and logically; establish and maintain effective relationships with other governmental officials and the general public.
