County of Santa Barbara is Hiring a Heavy truck driver Near Goleta, CA

POSITION : Under general direction, drives diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles in transporting refuse and recyclable material;

performs skilled work in the operation of loaders and other power equipment at refuse transfer stations and landfills; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS : Heavy Truck Driver is distinguished from the classes of Heavy Equipment Operator, Maintenance Worker II, and Refuse Checker by its primary assignment to the operation of diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles.

Positions in the Heavy Equipment Operator class operate heavy construction equipment including, but not limited to, motor graders, bulldozers, excavators, scrapers, cranes, steel rollers, and chip spreaders.

Incumbents in the Maintenance Worker II and Refuse Checker classifications may operate diesel tractor-trailer combinations on an occasional or fill-in basis if they possess the required Class A license.

The IDEAL CANDIDATE will have :

  • Ability to operate a manual transmission semi-truck trailer
  • Flexibility, a positive attitude, and an impeccable character
  • Ability to prepare and write clear and concise daily work reports which will be turned in at the end of the work day
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team player
  • Ability to be open to change and new information, and adapt behavior and work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, and unexpected obstacles
  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information; analyzing and projecting consequences of decisions and / or recommendations
  • Two () or more years of experience driving semi-truck, tractor with a foot or larger trailer
  • Wheel loader experience which includes loading different size trailers
  • Demonstrated ability in using a weighing system to load various payload sizes
  • Computer savvy

The Public Works Department The Santa Barbara County's Public Works Department employees are committed to efficiently providing, operating and maintaining public works infrastructure, facilities and services to make everyday life as safe and convenient as possible for the public we serve.

The Department is comprised of five Divisions : Administration, Resource Recovery & Waste Management, Surveyor's Office, Transportation, and Water Resources.

Operates a diesel tractor-trailer combination of four or more axles in transporting refuse and recyclable material; maintains operator log;

and computes axle weights to ensure that load is within legal limits.

Operates loaders for compacting and loading of refuse and recyclable materials into trucks for transfer to other sites;

and operates other equipment including dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts.

Performs minor repairs and servicing of equipment.

Employment Standards

  • One () year of Class A driving experience operating diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles; OR,
  • Experience as a Maintenance Worker II or Refuse Checker with Santa Barbara County, including hours of Class A driving experience operating diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles; OR ,
  • A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Additional Qualifications : Possession of a valid California Class A Driver’s License is required. Appointees to this classification will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to beginning work;

once on the job, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and / or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.

Knowledge of : mechanical operations and maintenance of diesel tractor-trailer combinations and heavy equipment; safe work practices;

California Dept. of Motor Vehicles guidelines for truck inspections and regulations related to operating semi-tractor trailers with multiple axles; and basic math.

Ability to : operate a diesel tractor-trailer combination in a safe and efficient manner; obtain California Department of Motor Vehicles tanker endorsement;

read and understand operating manuals, procedures and policies; write legibly to maintain logs; follow written and oral instructions; and work well with others.

Desirable Qualifications :

Knowledge of : mechanical operations and basic maintenance of loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts.

Ability to : operate loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts in a safe and efficient manner; and identify hazardous wastes.
