The Rockland County Division of Environmental Resources is seeking a candidate to work in their Parks Department. The work is complex and focused on the preservation of County property, maintenance of County parklands and involves frequent interaction with members of the public.
Job description: The job involves patrolling County parks, planning and leading environmentally related work projects, providing tours and educating school groups, civic groups and the general public, recommending maintenance schedules, operating equipment, and providing work guidance to Park Rangers, Groundsworkers, court-assigned offenders and student workers.
Candidates should have good knowledge of forestry, wildlife habitat and environmental and park conservation; good knowledge of hunting and fishing laws and regulations; good knowledge of fire and accident prevention, first aid and safety methods and techniques; ability to conduct tours, using appropriate terminology; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and with members of various local and New York State departments including the general public; ability to understand and interpret written material; ability to maintain records and prepare written reports. The work is performed under the general direction of a Parks Operations Manager and/or Coordinator of
Environmental Resources. The Park Ranger II may act for and in the absence of the Parks Operations Manager.
Required Qualifications:
1. A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Wildlife Management, or related field and two (2) years of experience as a Park Ranger, Forest Ranger or related;
2. An Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Wildlife Management, or related field and three (3) years of experience as a Park Ranger, Forest Ranger, or related.
Other Requirements and Information:
Residency in Rockland County is a requirement for this position.
This is a competitive position in Civil Service and reachability on a test would be a requirement for permanent appointment.
Incumbents must provide own transportation to each day’s assignment(s).
When required to perform driving duties, must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle License, appropriate for the class of vehicle to be operated.
Must complete all required pre-assignment training (must be provided by a certified security guard instructor at an approved security guard school) and all additional training and registration requirements as specified by the New York State Security Guard Act of 1992 and in accordance with the requirements of the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.
Salary and benefits are competitive with the public sector market including but not limited to the following:

35 Hour work week
