County of Orange is Hiring an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Near Orange, VA

Role Overview

This Orange County Commonwealth's Attorney office employs a vertical prosecution approach to maximize the experience in all three Courts for the prosecuting attorney. This position will share the responsibility for the Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court and General District Court and in the Circuit Court for direct indictments and cases arising from the District Courts. A four (4) attorney office, we expect the successful candidate to work as an experienced trial litigator within the team.

Role Description

  • Effectively prosecute complex criminal cases, including case and trial preparation for bench and jury trials; witness interview; negotiations with opposing counsel; preparation of jury instructions and voir dire
  • Work closely with the Victim-Witness Program and associated agencies such as the Department of Forensic Sciences, Office of the Medical Examiner, and law enforcement agencies and prosecutors on the local, state, and federal level.

Education and Experience

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in prosecuting animal neglect and forfeiture cases, and to candidates with experience in Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court.
  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Graduation from an accredited law school or recognized equivalent.
  • At least two (2) years of experience as a criminal prosecutor preferred but will consider seasoned attorney with an equivalent combination of education and experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Active Membership in good standing in the Virginia State Bar and a license in good standing from the Virginia Supreme Court. Completion of continuing education courses in all categories of criminal law.

Additional Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge and use of criminal law and procedure, Rules of Evidence, and the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia.
  • Strict compliance with the Virginia Code of Professional Ethics.
  • Ability to speak extemporaneously and persuasively.
  • Ability to express complex ideas orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationship with co-workers, law enforcement officers, City and State officials’ agencies and the general public and possess professional telephone etiquette.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $99,830.00 per year
