LUESA’s responsibilitiesrange from enforcing building and zoning codes to managing water and airresources for future generations.
BuildingWith Our Veterans is a program focused on recruiting and training militaryveterans with construction skills for jobs as code officials. Participantsspend approximately one year training on the job with Mecklenburg County Codeofficials and learning in a classroom environment. At the conclusion of theprogram, successful participants may apply for full-time employment withMecklenburg County Code Enforcement.

Theprogram, established in 2016 as a partnership between Mecklenburg County CodeEnforcement, Mecklenburg County Veterans Services, and Central PiedmontCommunity College, aims to provide long-term sustainable employment forunemployed or under-employed veterans.

Who can apply?
Honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces with experience in theconstruction trade – building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing, (for example) are eligible for consideration.

What is the program like?
The program consists of one year of part-time field and classroom training fora total of 999 hours combined.
On-the-job training in the field with a code official: 664 hours
Community college classroom training in a recognized building code inspectioncertificate program: 335 hours
Opportunity to be certified before completion of field and classroom training
Opportunity to be hired into Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement based onposition availability

PositionSummary
This position provides an opportunity to participate in an apprenticeshipprogram in the Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement Division. Learn and assistin the inspection of one and two family residential projects, townhouses,residential daycare facilities and residential care homes, in compliance withall North Carolina State Residential Building Codes. Obtain on-the-job trainingand education in answering technical questions for contractors concerning theNorth Carolina State Residential Building Codes and the building inspectionprocess.
Essential Functions
Participate in and successfully complete training sessions that provideadequate Training Hours to satisfy Mecklenburg County Requirements for theapprenticeship program
Attend 335 hours of training at CPCC to obtain the Intro to Building CodeInspector Certificate; total hours worked, including classroom time and fieldtime, shall not exceed 1000 hours
Perform comprehensive field inspections on residential projects to ensurecompliance with all applicable codes
Assist with the issuance of notices of violations, including stop work ordersand follows-up to ensure issue has been addressed
Assist inspectors in the investigation of complaints in reference to potentialcode violations
Prepare and analyze inspection reports to include collecting data and writingreports
Enter inspections results, defect codes, and notes on residential projects toensure compliance with all applicable codes
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: 
One year of related experience in any construction trade.
Education: 
High School diploma or equivalent
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: N/A
Licenses and Certifications
Ability to qualify for a North Carolina Level I Building Inspector ProbationaryCertificate
Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License
Must obtain and maintain a Mecklenburg County Vehicle Operator’s Permit
Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing preferred but notrequired.
