Starting Salary: $50,844.30 ($52,623.85 as of 1/1/2024)
(Overtime available once released from training)
Lateral Transfer Pay (up to Step 5): $56,196.14 ($58,163.04 as of 1/1/2024)

Be a United States Citizen
Be a high school graduate or equivalent
Have a valid Illinois Driver"s License
Reside within one (1) hour"s driving time to the McLean County Law & Justice Center Bloomington, Illinois at time of employment (regardless of weather and road conditions, road construction, vehicle availability, and vehicle performance).

Position Summary - No Prior Experience Required - On the Job Training
Correctional Officers are responsible for supervision and security of inmates in the McLean County Detention Facility in accordance with State and Federal Laws, established policies, regulations, and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maintain General Order and Protecting Staff and Inmates
Observe Conduct and Behavior of Inmates to Prevent Disturbances and Escape
Maintaining Inmate Records and Property
Conducting Cell Checks and Searches
Prisoner Transportation
Booking Arrestees (Fingerprinting, Photographs etc.)
Coordinating Inmate Programs
Enforce Rules and Regulations of the Facility.
Performs Related Work as Required
Supervises Daily Operations and Inmate Housing Units.
Escort Inmates Inside and Outside the Facility.
Other Duties as Assigned
Physical Attributes/Demands
Physical strength and agility and freedom from disabling defects; ability to meet such specific physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
Visual ability to read and operate standard office equipment.
Visual ability to operate vehicles during day and night hours.
Visual ability free of color blindness as demonstrated by successfully passing the test known as the H-R-R Pseudo Isochromatic Plates produced by the Instrument Division of the American Optical Company.
Ability to hear and understand spoken communication with other individuals in person and using a telephone or radio.
Ability to speak clearly enough to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and using a telephone or radio.
Ability to reach into file drawers in standard five-drawer filing cabinets.
Ability to physically restrain persons in the course of law enforcement activities.
Ability to pursue individuals on foot (i.e.: run) in the course of law enforcement
activities.
Ability to lift and maneuver moderately heavy tools and equipment.
Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects and/or persons in the course of rescue activities.
Freedom from mental disorders which would interfere with performance of all duties as described.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge or ability to learn the standards applied to the management of a jail. Knowledge or ability to learn basic principles and procedures of prisoner confinement.
Ability to exercise authority with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to manually prepare clear and concise reports.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to learn complex laws which define the rights of prisoners.
Ability to learn the use of firearms and pass State Firearms Test after training.
Manual ability to type, operate word processing equipment and Standard office equipment, such as copy machines, fax machines, mailing machines, etc.
Cognitive ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative.
Cognitive ability to perform complex and varied tasks.
Pass the Correctional Officer State Certification
The Sheriff of McLean County shall appoint only those persons who have been certified to him by this Commission as being eligible for appointment. In addition to the eligibility requirements above, Certified candidates must meet the following requirements.
Have successfully completed all testing procedures as the Commission may prescribe from time to time.
Be acceptable to the Commission upon oral interview.
Be acceptable to the Jail Administration upon oral interview.
Pass a background investigation.
Pass a pre-employment polygraph test.
Submit to medical and psychological tests.
Preference will be given to persons who have honorably served in the Military or Naval Service of the United States.
