JOB
Serves as a recognized expert in performing Hawaiian language translation services, providing specialized support, assistance and coordination regarding Hawaiian language translation and communications, both oral and written, for all matters related to the County of Maui (“County”) as an authoritative reference source.Distinguishing Characteristics: This class is responsible for researching and making literal and idiomatic translations between Hawaiian and English to translate new materials and corroborate existing translations of various English and Hawaiian language materials for the County. A position in this class serves as a recognized expert for Hawaiian language translation services among all County agencies.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
(The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position and are consistent with the class concept.)Uses literary analysis and research methods, which may include tracing root words and terminology, determining classes of words and word relationships, and determining definitions in relationship to usage;Consults with other Hawaiian language scholars to clarify differences in word meanings and usage in both written and spoken Hawaiian;Translates Hawaiian and English words, sentences and phrases and explains their meaning to the general public, as requested;Manages internal and external communications involving the use of the Hawaiian language;Prepares translations from the English language to the Hawaiian language; Prepares translations from the Hawaiian language to the English language;Validates the accurate use of the Hawaiian language for all County related websites, informational brochures, directives, memorandums, and all other official County documents and record;Develops and implements communications strategies involving the use of the Hawaiian language, including through the Mayor’s Communications Office, to provide accurate and timely information to the public;Translates new materials and corroborate existing translations of various Hawaiian language materials for County use, and public;Drafts County press releases, public announcements, public hearing notices, informational brochures, social media posts and other communications in Hawaiian;Creates and issues public-education materials, and conduct presentations and outreach in the Hawaiian language;Directs and/or supports the County in its effort to operate effectively as a bilingual government by implementing opportunities to promote inclusion of the Hawaiian Language;Performs other related duties as required.
