County of Jackson is Hiring a Mechanic Near Black River, WI

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Shop Foreman, the Mechanic maintains and repairs all gasoline and diesel-powered highway equipment, being capable of diagnosing problems, performing engine, transmission, differential, brake, hydraulic overhauls, tire, electrical and HVAC System repairs, along with routine maintenance. Work is to be performed according to established procedures and accepted trade practices. The Department shall furnish the necessary tools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Participates in disassembly, reconditioning, and replacement of parts and assemblies of engines, clutches, power transmissions, drivelines, differentials, suspension, steering, braking and hydraulic systems, and related electrical and engines assemblies
  • Removes and replaces radiators, fuel and hydraulic tanks, hoses, belts, brake systems, makes idle adjustments, replaces alternators, spark plugs, coils and injectors
  • Installs, assembles, tests, adjusts, maintains and repairs machinery or mechanical apparatus equipment. Removes worn or broken parts and replaces with new or required parts
  • Washes and performs routine maintenance/inspections on all types of highway equipment
  • Performs work on assigned equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, loaders, graders, tractors, rollers, dozers, mowers and various other types of highway equipment and attachments
  • Tests equipment after repairs to ensure proper operation and prepare written evaluations
  • Works from oral and written instructions
  • Exercises safety practices
  • Responds to emergency situations as required, but not limited to overtime as needed
  • Performs duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, snowplowing and various highway improvement, maintenance and repair work

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; technical school diploma in mechanics preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in gasoline/diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, and repair of air brakes, drive trains, suspensions, hydraulics, and PTO fluid power, HVAC and electrical and modern-day engine emissions
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s license with A or B and Air Brake Endorsements preferredor obtained within one (1) year of hire
  • ASE certified preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Over 70% of the work is spent standing, walking, feeling, hearing, using near vision, low lifting, low handling and low fingering. A lesser amount of time (20%) is spent sitting, stopping, laying, bending/twisting, reaching, talking, medium lifting, low/medium carrying, low/medium pushing/pulling, crouching, climbing (using legs and feet), medium handling and medium fingering. High lifting, high carrying, high pushing/pulling, and high fingering occur 10% of the time. In non-routine conditions crawling, running, climbing (using legs and arms for support), very high carrying, very high pushing/pulling and high handling are necessary.

Work Environment 

Over 80% of the work is performed inside. Working in extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, experiencing dramatic shifts in falling/rising temperature occur 10% of the time. Hazards from fast moving vehicles, humid conditions, vibrations occur 10% of the time. In unusual situations, wet conditions are present as well as many hazards – mechanical, electrical, chemical, inflammable materials, burns and heights over 12 feet. Fumes, mists, gases, odors, dust, poor ventilation and being in a physically confining area are also present in unusual situations.
