An employee in this class manages the maintenance and implementation of a secure server environment. Work includes evaluating and recommending software and hardware to improve the ability to meet departmental needs; developing strategic IT goals and strategies for the IT department as well as other departments; assessing possible upgrades and technology changes for the County’s server infrastructure; troubleshooting and resolving problems; identifying appropriate training sources; and maintaining virtual server clusters. Work requires understanding of server infrastructure such as VMWare, Linux, UNIX, Windows, as well as the operation of networks. Work is performed under general supervision of the IT Director and is evaluated through conferences, reports, and the effectiveness of automated systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Supervises and participates in the implementation, maintenance, monitoring, and analysis of physical and virtual servers.
· Maintains Cloud Computing software, hardware, connections; research upgrades and new systems that may be relevant for the county.
· Manages virtualization environments, upgrades, troubleshooting, and ongoing license verification.
· Dell Server specifications, deployment, patching and hardware/software troubleshooting.
· Ability to read and write various scripting languages.
· Researches and recommends future software, hardware, and technology services for the County’s server infrastructure.
· Coordinates with vendors on new installations, upgrades, and configuration of products; serves as primary technical contact for server hardware and configuration.
· Obtains quotes for needed hardware and software components.
· Coordinates leasing and purchasing of needed equipment and software; writes specifications for products.
· Oversees security administration and disaster recovery planning and testing; oversees server security, operating system upgrades, application installations and upgrades, new user installations, systems backups, and data recovery.
· Participates in the development, maintenance, implementation, and support of a variety of systems, such as multi-functional devices, administrative programming and scripting, presence management system, and virtual desktop solution.
· Communicate with internal and external customers including middle and upper management, as appropriate, in order to ensure the delivery of high-quality service and technical system support. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Thorough knowledge of physical and virtual servers, and other equipment used in County departments.
· Thorough knowledge of network infrastructure and various associated devices.
· Thorough knowledge of Windows, Linux, Unix, VMWare operating systems.
· Considerable knowledge of networking products including switches, routers and firewalls and of IP telephony system.
· Ability to manage multiple projects.
· Ability to analyze, diagnose, and rapid response to server infrastructure problems.
· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, County officials, and vendors.
· Willingness to keep current with the rapidly changing server technology.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to perform the basic life operational support functions of stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force to move objects
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer terminal and console, conduct visual inspections and do extensive reading
Desirable Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field and five years’ experience in virtualization environment administration, preferably in a government setting along with supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer BS/BA degree in the same fields.
Special Requirement
North Carolina Driver’s License
Ability to obtain certification in Azure, VMWare, Windows Server in timeframe set by the county.
