County of Fresno is Hiring a MAINTENANCE JANITOR Near Fresno, CA

Scheduled Salary Increases:
Step 6 effective 7/8/24 ($40,534 - $51,740 Annually) 
3% effective 01/20/25 ($41,756 - $53,300 Annually)

Fresno County currently has full-time and part-time employment opportunities available for Maintenance Janitor. Maintenance Janitors keep an assigned building space in a clean and orderly condition; perform miscellaneous semi-skilled maintenance and repair work; and perform related work as required while providing exemplary service in a manner consistent with the values and mission of Fresno County. Incumbents perform duties and responsibilities while demonstrating outstanding customer service skills.
Note: The current vacancies exist in the Fresno County Library and Sheriff's Office. However, the eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions in other departments as they occur. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
As a condition of employment, some positions may require the ability to pass a background check, polygraph examination and/or maintain security clearance to access Fresno County Detention Facilities. This classification may require employees to work in Fresno County Detention Facilities. Fresno County Detention Facilities are "no hostage" facilities. This means that in the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release. Some positions may require incumbents to work evenings and weekends (including Sundays) and travel between work sites.
Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.
Eligible candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Performs routine, minor maintenance and repairs on County buildings, equipment, appliances, facilities and grounds, including semi-skilled painting, carpentry or electrical work and minor plumbing repairs.
  • Reports maintenance and safety issues requiring skilled work to supervisor for action.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, hallways, lobbies, stairways, offices or other spaces, showers, drinking fountains, sinks, and fixtures using appropriate cleaning supplies and disinfectants. This may include OC chemical or other hazardous material clean ups, depending upon facility assignment.
  • Cleans floors by vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, waxing and polishing.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, and metal work; moves and arranges furniture, or other heavy or large objects.
  • Empties, cleans, and lines waste and recycling receptacles.
  • Washes windows, windowsills, glass surfaces, and walls.
  • Performs light grounds maintenance work, including sweeping and washing walkways and parking areas, and the removal of graffiti, litter, or debris.
  • May perform more difficult semi-skilled maintenance and repair work, including inspecting, installing, repairing, and replacing appliances, equipment, systems and building fixtures.
  • May perform various laundry duties including retrieving, sorting, and drying laundry; utilizing appropriate washing agents, wash cycles, and drying temperatures; and delivering laundry to designated areas.
Knowledge of:
  • Use and care of materials, chemicals, and equipment used in janitorial, building maintenance and grounds maintenance work;
  • Safety principles and practices used in janitorial, building maintenance, and grounds maintenance work;
  • Proper operation of tools and equipment used for minor maintenance, repairs and the cleaning and care of floors, walls, fixtures, and furniture;
  • Materials and chemicals used in cleaning, sanitizing, washing, and waxing operations;
  • Proper methods of sanitation and sterilization of clothing and linens, including the proper use and application of various cleaning agents and equipment.
Skills/Abilities to:
  • Understand, interpret, and apply department regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Clean and perform minor maintenance and repairs on buildings and facilities;
  • Operate manual and power janitorial and maintenance equipment and machinery and use cleaning materials safely;
  • Properly use and maintain commercial laundry equipment;
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels as well as with the public;
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, accountability and good judgement.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time, paid work experience performing janitorial or building and grounds maintenance services.

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent, may be required.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months (and may be extended up to 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
