County of Elmore is Hiring a CUSTODIAN Near Mountain Home, ID

General Statement of Duties

Performs manual work in the cleaning of county buildings and facilities. Work requires the safe operation of hand maneuvered electrical scrubbers, waxers, and buffers, mops, brooms, ladders and cleaning chemicals. The safe operation of a vehicle is required to travel from one building to the next. Work is usually scheduled during late afternoon or evening when buildings are vacant; performs related work as required.

Classification Summary

Performs janitorial work for the cleaning and maintenance of County buildings and facilities. Work is performed according to quality control standards and work schedules developed by the Building Maintenance Supervisor. After the initial training and orientation period, work is performed independently according to written or verbal instructions of the supervisor who may not be present for the entire shift. Work performance is reviewed by personal inspection of the assigned work areas by the supervisor or based on feedback to the supervisor from building occupants. Most duties are performed according to established routines and procedures and are repetitive in nature.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, and polishes floors;
  • Vacuums and shampoos carpets;
  • Dusts and polishes furniture;
  • Collects and empties wastebaskets; cleans trash disposal containers;
  • Cleans mirrors, venetian blinds, light fixtures, windows, doors, walls, and drinking fountains;
  • Cleans and sanitizes rest rooms and replenishes towels, tissues, and soap;
  • Moves janitorial equipment in and out of storage areas;
  • Safely uses cleaning chemicals and solvents; maintains inventory of cleaning supplies;
  • Notifies supervisor, verbally or in writing, of building conditions needing repairs;
  • Locks doors and windows when work is finished.
  • Responds to citizens’ and County employees’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • The safe use of janitorial supplies, and the safe use of manual and electrical cleaning equipment;
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in general cleaning and use of chemical cleaning solvents and agents.

Ability to:

  • Quickly learn and apply janitorial procedures;
  • Lift, move and maneuver hand and power cleaning equipment weighing up to 50 pounds safely;
  • Work independently to complete work on schedule and according to quality control standards;
  • Work evenings and irregular hours if required;
  • Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Identify and recommend improved methods of performing the work;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, building occupants, and the public;
  • Provide quality services in a cost-effective manner and to recommend improved methods of performing the work.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent general educational development (GED) certification; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Special Qualifications

  • Valid Idaho Driver’s License.
  • Ability to successfully pass a police background and records check.
  • Ability to pass a drug test.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
  • Sufficient vision, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to evaluate cleaning needs and safely use chemical agents and cleaning supplies;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate tools, materials and equipment involved in cleaning activities;
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to reach, stoop, utilize cleaning equipment such as vacuums, waxers, buffers, etc., and to occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.
