Position Title: Correctional Sergeant

Reporting Structure: Major

Rate of Pay: $26.50

Summary: Responsible for all security and control related functions during duty shift per management instructions. Seeks to provide maximum facility coordination in supervision and safety of incarcerated persons.

Examples of Duties (Illustrative Only):

· Supervises all security functions during shift as assigned by management.

· Supervises the feeding of incarcerated persons during mealtime.

· Makes routine inspections of all security equipment, doors, gates, fences, lighting systems, and other facility equipment as needed.

· Assists staff with unit counts.

· Serves as a member of the Classification and Disciplinary Hearing Boards as needed.

· Reviews reports written by officers during shift and ensures these reports are submitted as required.

· Provides immediate supervision and coaching to increase professional standards of correctional officers. Provides additional training to subordinate staff as needed.

· Assures that officers receive on-the-job training and safety training as required.

· Inspects or directs work to inspection of perimeter to test alarm systems, detect safety hazards and to ensure safety rules are posted and enforced.

· Assists officers and staff with unruly incarcerated persons and other assignments as required. Investigates and reports causes of disturbances.

· Responds to major unusual occurrences as trained. Facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to detainees/inmates in the event of injury, illness or emotional trauma.

· Directs work, provides training and performs inspections of work performed by incarcerated persons assigned work details.

· Assures that incarcerated persons, assigned to work details, receive safety training.

· Resolve day to day problems that arise within the housing units regarding incarcerated persons and staff.

· Promotes an atmosphere conducive to personality and character development of incarcerated persons and staff through the encouragement of favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of physical facilities, and influencing relationships among incarcerated persons.

· Assists in review of staff effectiveness by conducting frequent physical inspections of the facility to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

· High school diploma or equivalent certification required.

· College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services, or related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

· At least two (2) years of experience working in a correctional setting, one of which was in a position requiring supervisory capabilities and managerial responsibilities.

· Must be mature, flexible, intellectually alert, able to command the respect and confidence of incarcerated persons and staff, philosophically committed to the objectives of the facility, applicable court orders, and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.

· Ability to work with computers and the necessary software used by the department.

· Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including, but not limited to, sitting and walking at will, walking/standing and/or sitting for long periods, lifting heavy objects, crouching/kneeling, bending at waist, close and far vision, reaching, handling/ grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, and physically restraining inmates during emergency situations.

· Ability to deal swiftly, rationally and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations and perform duties despite the stress of potential injuries and/or loss of life to self and/or others.

· Ability to de-escalate volatile situations by means of conversation/negotiation. Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare required forms and reports within department deadlines.

· Ability to effectively listen, comprehend and communicate with co-workers, other County departments, inmates and their family members, other law enforcement agencies, and the public by intercom, radio, telephone or in person, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

· Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

· Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

· Must have a proven work history with sound abilities to write communications, documents, policy, court room defenses, contract negotiations, and other required written correspondence.

· Must be able to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions.

· Must have completed an approved training program resulting in a certificate of satisfactory completion. Ability to obtain certification for training such as CPR, First Aid and Firearms.

· Ability to work alone or with others in a team environment with minimum supervision.

· Ability to occasionally work evening, weekend, irregular, and/or extended hours.

Work Environment:

Standard jail facility and office environment.Incumbent performs duties in a jail facility and occasionally in a vehicle transporting inmates, involving sitting and walking at will, walking/standing and/or sitting for long periods, lifting/ carrying heavy objects, crouching/kneeling, bending at the waist, close and far vision, reaching, handling/ grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the hazards associated with jail operations, such as potentially violent individuals and communicable disease. No prolonged extreme physical demands are associated with normal duties or assignments, but incumbent may exert strenuous physical effort during emergency situations, such as running distances under one mile and/or physically restraining inmates. Incumbent must perform duties despite the stress of potential injury and/or loss of life to self-and/or others.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $26.50 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 60 per week
