Nestled in the heart of the Sacramento Valley, the County of Colusa is a safe and vibrant community rich in history and tradition, and offering a wonderful environment in which to live, work and play. The County, with approximately 22,000 residents, includes two incorporated cities: Colusa, which is the county seat, and Williams. The local economy is largely agriculturally based, producing crops valued at more than $900 million each year and exporting farm commodities throughout the United States and over seventy countries worldwide.
Colusa is centrally located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. Interstate 5 offers a north / south route through the county. Our location is approximately:
County government business is still conducted within the courthouse which was built in 1861 and has operated continuously ever since. The County’s annual General Fund budget is roughly $39 million; the total budget is approximately $137.5 million. The workforce is comprised of approximately 400 full-time equivalent positions.
Colusa County also offers many diverse outdoor recreational opportunities and is considered to be a sportsman’s paradise. The Sacramento River meanders through the County. Portions of five national protected areas are located within the county: Butte Sink Wildlife Refuge, Colusa National Wildlife Refuge, Delevan National Wildlife Refuge, Mendocino National Forest, and Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. This recruitment will be used to fill a current vacancy and establish an eligibility list to fill other openings without reposting.* Based on the employee’s base rate of pay, but shall not include any other compensation.Receives general supervision from higher level sworn staff.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES—Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Patrol and respond to calls and complaints; conduct investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, vehicle accidents and other crimes; check buildings for physical security.
Prepare various reports on investigations including arrest and unusual incidents observed.
Make arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; gather and preserve evidence; testify and present evidence in court.
Assist in investigations in cases that are of a criminal nature.
Serve as a Deputy Coroner; assist in investigations and reports of death.
Issue traffic citations; serve warrants, subpoenas, and civil documents.
Work with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.
Perform Bailiff duties at the courthouse.
Answer questions and provide information to public regarding Sheriff Department policies and procedures.
Administer first aid in emergency situations.
Assist in search and rescue operations.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
Procedures, methods and techniques used in law enforcement including patrol, traffic control, crime prevention, investigations, apprehension, civil process, and arrest.
Principles and practices used in processing Coroner’s cases, search and seizure, and in the preservation and presentation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases.
Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
First aid principles and practices.
Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting.
Ability to:
Serve in a law enforcement capacity in a responsible and effective manner, often under difficult and stressful situations.
Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places.
Use and care of firearms.
Identify narcotics and potential substance abusers.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
Effectively communicate with and elicit information from upset and irate citizens.
Respond to requests and inquiries of the general public.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
