Summary

The Security Operator II position is a non-sworn civilian position responsible for serving as a communications liaison while providing dignitary protection to Common Pleas Court Judges, Hearing Officers, and other elected officials and executives on a case-by-case basis as determined by the Sheriff's Office. The Security Operator II assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for the public and protectees. May be required to engage in rapid and effective decision-making to provide assistance to law enforcement. Responsible for Security Officer I duties as needed.
A Criminal Background check is required.
Essential Duties

  • Provide close protection and other security-related functions for the Judge and/or assigned client.
  • May be required to assist Judge/Client verbally or physically in evacuating an area and/or shelter in place.
  • May engage in the use of force against another person for purpose of protecting themselves, the Judge/Client protectees, and civilians.
  • Operate and maintain protective, operations, and communications equipment.
  • Promptly identify and communicate vulnerabilities and safety concerns directly to the Sheriff's Office Judicial Security Operations Unit.
  • Complete a variety of written reports, logs, or forms as required or directed by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Maintain a favorable image to the public and county employees while providing assistance.
  • Maintain custody of and return all legally possessed confiscated items to the owners upon completion of their business.
  • Assist Sheriff's Deputies with counter-surveillance and protective operations, when necessary, as directed. These tasks may include, but are not limited to:
  • Participate in advance protective planning and threat vulnerability assessments.
  • Effectively manage requests by the protectees against the need to maintain safety and security for the protectees, employees, and the public.
  • Respond to emergencies to provide assistance, perform medical operations, and ensure site security. This may involve the deployment of non-lethal weapons.
  • Perform all other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.
Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen test and physical fitness exam conducted at an HR-approved testing facility.
  • Must obtain PA Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and handle confidential matters.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong professional ethics
  • Successfully complete Act 2 Waiver training within one year after employment date.
  • Maintain CPR and EMS provider-level certifications.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
  • Six months to one year of job-related experience in a law enforcement, executive protection, court security, or customer service representative role.
  • Basic criminal and civil law knowledge and experience.
  • Training in defensive and security tactics.
  • Emergency Medical First Aid certification.
  • Firearms qualification
  • Knowledge, Skills, or ability to properly operate a X-Ray Scanner and/or metal detector..

Physical Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand for long periods of time (2 hours or more), walk, and work with machinery. Must be able to see, hear, speak, and write clearly in order to communicate with employees and/or customers. At times the employee will need to sit; bend, twist or rotate at the waist; kneel, stoop, crouch or squat; climb stairs; lift items weighing up to 50 pounds; push and carry items, walk to remote locations for security checks, check personnel and security on various floors, work with an uncommon level of noise; and taste or smell. In emergencies may deploy nonlethal weaponary and assist with establishing control of prisoners, civilians, and others disruping public safety.
The special vision and hearing requirements for this position are:
  • Close Vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
  • Color Vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) for X-ray monitors and weapon detection.
  • Peripheral Vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
  • Depth perception (three-dimensional vision ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)
  • Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Ability to hear alarms.
Work Environment:

  • Exposure to stressful situations, such as challenging individuals who are in or approaching an unauthorized area.
  • May be subjected to verbal and physical abuse from members of the public

  • Work in environments and under conditions that may require the use and wearing of protective gear and devices, and/or awareness of personal safety and safety of others.
  • Standing and walking may be required for long periods of time, and may involve climbing stairs or walking up inclines and on uneven terrain.
  • May risk exposure to low doses of x-ray radiation within Occupational Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure limits while operating x-ray machines at security checkpoints
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Will be exposed to sudden temperature changes
